On My Block's Jason Genao Dishes on Netflix's New Show (Exclusive)

Jason Genao is starring in what’s going to be your new fave Netflix show, On My Block.

In the series, he stars as Ruby Martinez, a 14 year old Hispanic kid growing up in south central LA. In this group of friends, he lends the brains, who manages to find a way to talk himself out or accidentally into any situation.

Ruby is also described as a “ladies man who finally gets the opportunity to make his moves when a family friend has to move in after her parents get deported.”

Jason calls the new series “a depiction of diversity in the forefront, where this time, we (people of color) get to be the heroes.”

• If I wasn’t an actor, I’d be a chef or medical examiner
• I got my first big break in high school when I was cast in HBO’s The Get Down. I missed all my graduation practice and nearly missed my graduation, but it was definitely worth it as I was able to work with Baz Luhrmann
• My favorite film is Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf and I know every line. It was the second film that inspired me to be an actor, the first being La Vie en Rose.
• Some of the actors who have inspired me are Bette Davis, Heath ledger, Bea Arthur, Michelle Williams, Michael Shannon and Marion Cotillard
• My favorite poem is “I’m Nobody! Who Are You?” by Emily Dickinson
• I’m Dominican in ethnicity, but live in New Jersey
• My favorite ice cream is a birthday cake ice cream homemade by a man near my home in the Dominican Republic
• I wasn’t much of a sports person in school, only ever tried my hand in boxing and swimming
• I’m known to try anything food wise, but I can’t stand cilantro or chocolate
• I have a huge family between my mother and father’s side. I have over 200 uncles, aunts and cousins
