Alex & Maia Shibutani Reveal They're Taking a Year Off From Competitive Skating

Alex and Maia Shibutani have announced that they plan to take the upcoming competitive season off.

While we won’t be seeing the sibling duo on the ice competitively, the two-time Olympic bronze medalists are still on the ice for the Stars on Ice tour.

They also aren’t ruling out returning to competition in the 2019-2020 season.

“Our experience at the Olympic Games was the result of four years of relentless training and dedication,” Maia shared in their statement (via TeamUSA).

“While we are still young and love competing and performing, we have exciting projects that we have the opportunity to work on both together and individually.”

Alex adds, “We are currently touring with Stars on Ice and have plans to skate, train, and create new programs for shows we will be skating in throughout the year.”

He also sent thanks to their fans: “The support we have received from everyone around the world has been amazing and we are so grateful. We are incredibly excited about our new projects and opportunities and look forward to sharing them with everyone soon.”

Maia and Alex were also just signed to UTA for future endeavors.
