Amandla Stenberg Talks 'The Hate U Give' Recasting Situation at CinemaCon 2018

Amandla Stenberg speaks on stage at the 20th Century Fox Special Presentation Event during 2018 CinemaCon on Thursday (April 26) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While there, the 19-year-old actor addressed the recasting of Kian Lawley in the upcoming movie, The Hate U Give.

“I was salty in the reshoots, I couldn’t help it,” Amandla says. “But it really helped my performance, I think.”

KJ Apa took of Kian‘s role of Chris, and while shooting, Amandla says that her ‘saltiness’ was exactly what they needed.

“It helped contribute to even better work,” Amandla says. “We have to be extremely careful with the narrative, in terms of how we distribute the movie. We have to make sure it’s very clear that we authentically care about the topic of the film from root to finish.”
