The Middle's Eden Sher Looks Back On The Series & Sue's Impact on Young Girls

We’ll say goodbye to one of the greatest female characters on television tonight – Sue Heck.

The Middle star Eden Sher talked with Paper magazine about playing a strong, uncompromising teen on the long running series and hopes she inspires beyond the final episode.

“I am so grateful. I think I took it for granted to be playing a girl who didn’t have to compromise anything,” Eden admits. “I got to be exactly the kind of strong teenager not always comfortable with herself, focused on herself, not in a cheesy way. They just did it really, really well.”

She adds, knowing of the pressures young girls go through now, “Girls have such a tough go of it in middle school and high school. When I really came into my feminism, I had this vision of going across the country and talking to middle-school girls. It’s my dream: if I could make any impact on females aged 10-14 in any way.”

Eden remembers how she used to idolize Ren Stevens, played by Christy Carlson Romano, from Even Stevens, and hopes that Sue Heck will have that same tupe of legacy.

“She was a role model. She was smart and on top of her stuff,” she shared. “After three years on the show, when girls would come up to me, I would realize I might be some girl’s Ren Stevens. I started bawling.”

Eden adds, “I’m grateful that I could possibly be that person and I didn’t have to sacrifice my integrity or anything.”

The Middle‘s final episode airs TONIGHT, May 22nd @ 8:30PM ET/PT on ABC.
