India Eisley Talks About Finding Fauna's Voice in 'I Am The Night'

India Eisley arrives for an appearance at Build Series in New York City on Tuesday afternoon (January 22).

The 25-year-old actress, who you might remember from The Secret Life of the American Teenager, will star in the upcoming TNT miniseries, I Am The Night, as Fauna Hodel.

The limited series centers on Fauna, who was given away by her teenage birth mother, begins to investigate the secrets to her past, following a sinister trail that swirls ever closer to an infamous Hollywood gynecologist connected to the legendary Black Dahlia murder.

India recently spoke with Variety about finding the right voice and accent for her character, which meant dropping her own British accent.

“We had a really fantastic dialect coach named Samara Bay… she was wonderful to work with,” India says. “We didn’t want the accents to basically become their own character. When I first auditioned for it, I read it as ‘non-rhotic Southern accent,’ and I got really excited because non-rhotic is like Gone with the Wind.”

She added that her accent in the audition was shot down fairly quickly, and another was developed in its’ place.

“As it goes on, like the scenes with Connie [Nielsen], it [the accent] lessens as the series goes on,” India adds. “For a lot of people, and I’m one of them, where you are and who you’re spending your time with greatly impacts your accent. And then it’s also just adapting. It can be a survival mechanism, really. [She] has to amp it up because she’s with these people now.”

I Am The Night will premiere next week on January 28th on TNT.
