Vanessa Hudgens Hopes There Will Be an LGBTQ Character in the HSM TV Series

Vanessa Hudgens has expressed her support for the upcoming High School Musical television series before, and now, she’s hoping that it’ll include an out LGBTQ character.

While the original HSM franchise hinted at Ryan’s sexuality, it was never fully said or explored. Ryan even took Kelsi to the prom in the final film.

“I feel like if we were to make it today, that would’ve been the case,” the 30-year-old actress told Gay Times about Ryan being out.

Vanessa adds, “I think that at that time, Disney wasn’t ready for that. If it was another network…Everything has its time and place…”

“I personally would’ve loved that in High School Musical and a lot of people would’ve loved that as well. But I mean, Ryan was kind of a taste of that? It was never fully explored but I don’t know how straight Ryan was…”

Vanessa went on to say that there should be an LGBTQ character in the new series.

“I really do! I think that it’s so important,” she shared. “In high school, there’s so many different types of people and everyone should be addressed. We’re all equals, everyone has a fair shot to have their story revealed and explored.”
