Here's How Melissa Benoist Got The Role of Supergirl

Melissa Benoist has been nailing the role of Supergirl since the start and it’s not hard to see why.

Casting director David Rapaport spoke with Entertainment Weekly in a new interview and opened up about recruiting Melissa for the part.

For the series title role, the prototype was actually Jennifer Lawrence.

“There’s a quality about Jennifer Lawrence, an openness, a goofiness. She’s relatable,” he shared, instantly remembering that Melissa had all of those qualities. “I got to know Melissa, and she seemed to encapsulate all these qualities they were looking for.”

As for finding Natalie Maines for Nia Nal, aka Dreamer, she was a bit harder to find.

“I was scared because I wanted to get it right,” David shared of casting the first transgender superhero role.

He added that Natalie was “from Maine, so she took a little bit of digging to find. But this was such a great opportunity to tell an amazing story, and Nicole is a great actress and an outspoken activist. She’s such a hero to me.”

SuperGirl airs Sundays on The CW.
