Alisha Boe & Justin Prentice Talk About Why '13 Reasons Why' Shows The Difficult Things To Watch: 'It's Incredibly Important'

Alisha Boe and Justin Prentice are opening up about their controversial show, 13 Reasons Why, and just why the series chooses to show the difficult things to watch.

Speaking with Variety this weekend, both actors addressed Bryce’s trial where he got a slap on the wrist, and the events that led up to the almost school shooting at Liberty High.

“We wanted to show what would … make a person want to do something like that, and I feel like it’s happening so much in America that it’s absolutely disgusting,” Alisha says of the shooting storyline.

She adds, “Not even after like the fifth [school shooting] we haven’t implemented change, and it’s like enough is enough. 13 Reasons Why is a form of entertainment that likes to shed light on political issues, and we wanted to show something from the first perspective, but I think it was incredibly important because that’s what’s happening in America, and we need to talk about it.”

She and Justin also hit on the importance of Bryce’s trial and why you’re supposed to feel ticked off about his sentence.

“People were upset when they watched it, but unfortunately that’s reality,” Alisha says. “What the show doesn’t shy away from is telling the truth in a heartbreaking way, and they’re supposed to be pissed off.”

Justin adds, “Jocks, athletes get off easily, especially if you’re a straight white male from a wealthy family.”

“Unfortunately that’s how reality plays out nowadays, so our show tries to showcase things as realistically as possible, and as much as it sucks that incidence is very realistic.”

13 Reasons Why, seasons one and two, are streaming now on Netflix.

Miles Heizer Opens Up About The Alex, Jessica & Justin Love Triangle on '13 Reasons Why'

Miles Heizer Opens Up About The Alex, Jessica & Justin Love Triangle on '13 Reasons Why'

Last we saw Alex on 13 Reasons Why, he had no idea that Jessica and Justin had rekindled their relationship.

Miles Heizer chatted with ET about the little love triangle that emerged in season two of the Netflix series.

“I think that he doesn’t really know yet, so I would imagine that he would be, he’d feel a bit heartbroken,” he shared when asked about Alex’s reaction to the reunited couple.

He hoped the cast and fans would get to find out in another season – and we will, seeing as the show was just renewed for a third.

As for what he’d like to see happen with Alex personally, he says that he hopes “he’s happy and figuring things out and not being too hard on himself ultimately.”

Miles continues, “I think everyone’s always growing and changing and Alex certainly is and so hopefully, yeah, growing and becoming himself.”

'13 Reasons Why' Stars Reveal Their Wishlists For Season 3

'13 Reasons Why' Stars Reveal Their Wishlists For Season 3

Earlier today, Netflix announced that 13 Reasons Why had been renewed for a third season.

Some fans are excited and interested in continuing the stories of Liberty High, as are the cast of the series too.

Justin Prentice, Brandon Butler, Timothy Granaderos, Anne Winters and more have all recently opened up about what they’d like to see in the next season.

“It’s a question of, is there more story to tell, do we want to see these kids not only continue to recover, but, how do they bring forward into their lives the thing they’ve learned about what they’ve been through?” showrunner Brian Yorkey shared during the recent FYSee event.

He added, “The rest of the story is about young people, as so many young people, maybe all young people today (learn) how to heal from the things that have hurt them…to make the world that they want it to be, not just the world they are inheriting…and above all, how to take care of each other.”
