Aly Raisman Reacts To Former Team USA Doc Larry Nassar's Guilty Plea & Sentencing

Aly Raisman Reacts To Former Team USA Doc Larry Nassar's Guilty Plea & Sentencing

Aly Raisman has taken to social media following Larry Nassar‘s guilty plea and sentencing on seven accounts of sexual assault.

The decorated Olympian wrote on Instagram that “it’s about time that Larry plead guilty and owned up to his actions. I am beyond disgusted that a decorated Olympic and USA Gymnastics doctor was able to prey upon so many over such a long period of time.”

Aly adds that just because he plead guilty to only seven, doesn’t mean that there aren’t more out there.

“We many never know how many others may be suffering in silence therefore it is important for us to have an environment where it is safe and comfortable for those to come forward.”

Nassar now faces 25 to 40 years in prison.

Fans Are Disappointed in Gabby Douglas For Her Response To Aly Raisman's Victim Blaming Tweet

Fans Are Disappointed in Gabby Douglas For Her Response To Aly Raisman's Victim Blaming Tweet

Aly Raisman has been opening up about her experience of being sexually assaulted by former Olympic gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar for a few weeks.

Since sharing her story, Aly is determined to erase victim blaming altogether.

“Just because a women does a sext photoshoot or wears a sexy outfit, does not give a man the right to shame her or not believe he when she comes forward about sexual abuse. What is wrong with some of you?” Aly wrote in a tweet this morning.

Former Olympic teammate Gabby Douglas saw it, and responded in an unexpected way.

Obviously, her fans are disappointed. We’re disappointed. Gabby has since deleted her tweet, but as we all know, nothing is totally gone from the internet.

She tried to explain herself, however, that didn’t go well either.

After her response, Gabby‘s fans (or, now former fans) are teaching her a lesson about what victim blaming and shaming is on the social media network.

“You really should read up on rape and how no matter what you wear, your clothes have nothing to do with being raped. Your comment was heartbreaking, uneducated and misinformed. You owe victims an apology,” one fan responded to her.

Another added, “Sexual assault/abuse isn’t about what you wear. It’s about power. Someone could be head to toe covered and still be assaulted. I strongly encourage you to evaluate what you’re saying and how it can affect others, especially many young women who have looked up to you.”

Simone Biles was even shocked by her response.

Aly Raisman Delivers Inspiring Speech about Sexual Assault at Glamour's Women of the Year Summit 2017

Aly Raisman takes the stage for Glamour’s 2017 Women Of The Year Live Summit held at the Brooklyn Museum on Monday (November 13) in New York City.

Just hours before the dinner and awards event, the Olympic gymnast made an inspiring speech about her experience with sexual assault with former Team USA doctor Larry Nassar, something that she only revealed earlier this month.

“I am among a huge number of young gymnasts abused by US Olympic and USA Gymnastics team doctor, Larry Nassar,” she opened with. “This man held a position of influence and power in the sport for more than 20 years. The extent of harm he caused is beyond comprehension.”

Aly continued, “More than 130 young women have filed lawsuits alleging abuse by Nassar and we may never know how many others may be suffering in silence. I stand here for all of them.”

“I am beyond disgusted that a decorated Olympic and USA Gymnastics doctor was able to prey upon so many over such a long period of time; and until we fully understand the flaws in the system that allowed this to happen in the first placeand enabled it to continue for decadeswe can’t be confident it won’t happen again… I am determined to work towards real and meaningful change.”

Aly came forward with her own story shortly after teammate McKayla Maroney revealed her own experience with the same team doctor.

Aly Raisman Accuses Former USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar Of Sexual Abuse

Aly Raisman Accuses Former USA Gymnastics Doctor Larry Nassar Of Sexual Abuse

Aly Raisman has taken a brave step forward and says that she was also sexually abused by former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar.

The Olympic gymnast joins her “Fierce Five” member McKayla Maroney, who opened up about her own experiences last month.

Aly spoke to 60 Minutes, in an interview scheduled to air Sunday, that she told FBI investigators about her abuse after serving as national team captain at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“Why are we looking at why didn’t the girls speak up? Why not look at what about the culture?” she shared. “What did USA Gymnastics do, and Larry Nassar do, to manipulate these girls so much that they are so afraid to speak up?”

Dr. Nassar is currently in jail after pleading guilty to child pornography charges – but not guilty to sexual assault. More than 130 women have filed civil lawsuits against the doctor claiming abuse.

“I am angry,” Aly adds. “I’m really upset because it’s been– I care a lot you know, when I see these young girls that come up to me, and they ask for pictures or autographs, whatever it is, I just– I can’t– every time I look at them, every time I see them smiling, I just think– I just want to create change so that they never, ever have to go through this.”

The Fierce Five Support McKayla Maroney in Light of Assault Allegations

The Fierce Five in the 2012 summer Olympics was made up of Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber.

Now, after McKayla has bravely come forward with allegations of repeated sexual assault against her U.S. team doctor, Dr. Larry Nassar, her former teammates are speaking out with messages of support.

“The scariest night of my life happened when I was 15 years old,” McKayla remembered in her letter. “I had flown all day and night with the team to get to Tokyo. [Dr. Nassar had] given me a sleeping pill for the flight, and the next thing I know, I was all alone with him in his hotel room getting a ‘treatment.’ I thought I was going to die that night.”

Aly was quick to support her friend.

“100% support you,” she tweeted. “SO proud of you and your strength. Love you like a sister!!” She also tweeted a picture of the two of them in a message of support.

“Heartbreaking that things like this can happen in this world,” Kyla agreed. “My heart goes out to you mac & all those affected by such tragic events.”

“So sad and heartbreaking that this happened to you Mack,” Jordyn echoed. “I’m here for you and I support you.”

In terrible cases like these, supporting the women who come forward is so important. We’re glad her teammates are speaking out.
