'Divergent' TV Movie & Series Based On 'Ascendant' In Talks At Starz

Last year, news broke that the final film in the Divergent film series, Ascendant, would be skipping the big screen and going straight to a TV movie instead.

The TV movie, which formerly starred Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, would set it up for a spinoff series as well.

Now, Deadline reports that Starz is in negotiations for this with Lionsgate.

However, don’t expect Shailene, Theo or Miles Teller (Peter) to return for it. They’ve all said, several times, that they weren’t interested in making a TV movie.

So far, there are no details about the TV adaptions right now, just that there is talk.

Based on Veronica Roth‘s best-selling books, the Divergent series was set in a futuristic society where people are broken up into social and personality-related factions. authored the best-selling series that inspired the movies.

It’s safe to say that we all were shocked about the news that Divergent‘s final film, Ascendant, wouldn’t be hitting theaters as planned, the cast was even more shocked.

“It caught us all by surprise,” Miles Teller shared with THR. “At this point, it’s a different set of circumstances. We’ll see. I honestly haven’t talked to anybody,” he added about returning for the project where he plays Peter.

“Things do change anytime they’re messing with something that was not the original intention,” he continued. “We all signed on for it in hopes that it’d be released in theaters, and we all had every intention of finishing [the franchise].”

The plan, which was discussed with Variety, is to wrap up the series as a TV movie, which would then transition into a TV series.

“We got excited about the possibility of what the series could look like – resolving the novel in a season across 10 to 13 episodes and then expanding from there into multiple seasons,” Lionsgate TV Group Chair Kevin Beggs said.

Shailene Woodley Surprised About 'Ascendant' Straight to TV News

Shailene Woodley is just as surprised as the rest of us about the Ascendant news.

The 24-year-old actress, who stars as Tris in the film franchise, spoke to Deadline about the news while arriving at 2016 San Diego Comic-Con.

“Honestly, I was on a plane when all that happened and I landed, and I’m like ‘Whoa, what’s going on?!’” she shared. “I need to talk and find out what the details are.”

Shailene didn’t comment on if she’d return as Tris for the TV plans at all.

If you missed it, Lionsgate announced yesterday that Ascendant, the final film, would skip the big screen for a TV movie and spinoff series.
