Who Are 2017 US Nationals Pairs Champions Haven Denney & Brandon Frazier?

Congratulations to Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier — the 2017 US Pairs National Champions!

The longtime figure skating team earned the top spot at this weekend’s 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, beating Marissa Castelli and Mervin Tran (2nd), and Ashley Cain and Tim LeDuc (3rd) for the gold medal.

Haven has been battling a severe knee injury for the past year, so this win is huge!

But who are Haven and Brandon? Check out our Five Fast Facts about the team below:

  • Haven is 21 and Brandon is 24. They’ve been partners since 2002, when they were a roller skating team.
  • Haven’s older sister is Caydee Denney. She and Caydee (with partner John Coughlin) shared the title of US Champions in 2012. Caydee was at the senior level, while Haven and Brandon won the junior title that year
  • They were also the 2013 World Junior Pair Champions
  • Brandon and Haven took most of 2016 off, because of her injury. She had torn the anterior cruciate ligament, lateral collateral ligament, and bilateral and lateral meniscus in her right knee
  • They’re perfectionists. Brandon shared, “Haven and I, we’re perfectionists. You should see us training. Today was all about going out and doing what we can. We had to fight. The result is always a bonus for us. We’re excited to be out here again. We’re back. This whole season has been a comeback season.”

Ice Dance Siblings Maia & Alex Shibutani Win Gold at Skate America 2016

Maia and Alex Shibutani show off their strong skills on the ice at 2016 Progressive Skate America held at Sears Centre Arena over the weekend in Chicago, Ill.

The ice dance champion siblings took over the title, with Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue taking the silver medal.

“It’s not a choice a lot of other teams are making, but it really allows us to show our leg lines and movement and really just skate freely,” Maia shared of wearing pants for their short dance.

She added, “It was a collective thought from the group that created the program, and it’s one thing to have the idea, but it takes confidence to wear pants out there, and I have that now! So it’s just fun.”

Pairs skaters Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier also won the silver medal. Jason Brown and Adam Rippon grabbed the silver and bronze medal for the men’s competition.

Haven Denney & Brandon Frazier Take Pairs Silver Medal at Skate America 2014

Haven Denney and Brandon Frazier wow the crowd with during the Pairs Free Skate during 2014 Hilton HHonors Skate America held at the Sears Centre Arena on Sunday evening (October 26) in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The Team USA pairs skaters took home the silver medal, the highest finish for a U.S. pair at Skate America since 2008.

“I would have to say that when I first got out there to skate for warmups I was a little shaky in the knees and I was a little nervous,” Brandon shared with press afterwards. “I told myself when they called our names out, ‘Don’t think too much; just give everything you have and let your training take over.’

He added, “When we got done, the feeling of, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that happened.’ That was probably the best long we’ve ran and to do that at a competition I always wanted to compete at was just an astounding feeling.”
