'The Originals' Writer Carina MacKenzie on How Kol's Backstory Will Manifest on 'The Awakening'

'The Originals' Writer Carina MacKenzie on How Kol's Backstory Will Manifest on 'The Awakening'

If you’re anything like us, you can’t get enough of The Originals – so it’s a good thing we have the new Kol-focused web series, The Awakening, to feed our addiction.

JJJ caught up with writer Carina Mackenzie to get the scoop on how the series came to fruition and what we can expect.

“The first episode I wrote of The Originals back in season one was originally going to tell this flashback story about how Kol’s time in New Orleans had set in motion all these little things that were having an influence on our characters in the present,” Carina said. “We ended up having to do something different with that episode — for a lot of reasons, one of which was that it was airing the same night that Nathaniel Buzolic‘s episode of Supernatural was airing, and there was some concern from the network about that — but I had already written this flashback story. I kind of thought oh well, it’s just gonna be this thing on the cutting room floor. But when the opportunity came up to do this web series with Target, we knew we wanted to do a flashback story, so I repurposed that old story.”

As for how his story connects to what’s currently going on in the French Quarter, Carina said, “It ties together very strongly with what’s happening right now. In present day, Daniel Sharman‘s version of Kol has been flirting with Davina (Danielle Campbell) but we haven’t really heard his plans, his agenda. In the flashbacks, we’ll finally tell the story of what Kol wants for himself, and why he needs Davina, specifically, to get it. We’re also going to introduce a couple of locations in the web series — Kol’s secret clubhouse, and then later another place I can’t tell you about for fear of the spoiler gods striking me down — that are going to become very important on the show.”

The second segment of The Awakening will be live on CWTV.com @ 8PM ET, just in time for a new episode of The Originals on The CW!

JJJ Book Club Exclusive: Watch the Trailer for Carina Adly MacKenzie's 'Eternal Night'!

JJJ Book Club Exclusive: Watch the Trailer for Carina Adly MacKenzie's 'Eternal Night'!

JJJ is so excited to introduce an exclusive book trailer for Carina Adly MacKenzie‘s first novel “Eternal Night”!

We caught up with Carina, who also happens to be a writer on The Originals, to chat about the novel, which follows six young gods hiding in plain sight among mortals.

“The idea for ‘Eternal Night’ started with my editors, actually. I always envisioned myself writing a more realistic contemporary high school novel, and I hope to do that next. Once we got to talking and the idea of gods came up, though, I was immediately excited,” Carina told JJJ. “When I was a kid I was obsessed with this book of Greek mythology — it’s actually pretty scandalous, when you’re nine years old — so after talking to my editors, I went to the bookstore and asked them to help me find a giant yellow book about Gods. That was all I remembered of it. It turned out to be the ‘D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths,’ so I dug into that and from there got really inspired and excited about this story and finding ways to make it my own.”

Here’s the book’s synopsis: On a hot June morning, the body of a beautiful girl is found floating in the rooftop pool of the Jefferson Hotel, her white-ink tattoos revealing the story of a life much longer than seems possible. Only the immortals know the truth: Nadia was the goddess of hope. Now she’s gone, and the world as they know it is ending. The Hudson River has turned blood red. Storms rage overhead. Mania is rapidly spreading across the globe.

It is up to the remaining gods—Lola, Dean, Weston, Mark, Nike and Peitha—to put aside centuries of betrayal and heartbreak, and stop the mysterious source of darkness that is taking over…before the sun sets forever.

Carina‘s writing has gotten a ton of praise, including from actors Joseph Morgan, Colton Haynes, and Phoebe Tonkin, as well as longtime TV executive producers/writers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson.
