Liam Payne wasn’t initially sold on the name Bear for his newborn baby boy.
The 23-year-old singer recently revealed that it was girlfriend Cheryl Cole who was pushing for it, and he eventually came around.
“It was an internal battle,” Liam told Total Access radio (via E! News). “I wanted a more traditional name and she wanted a name that was more unusual. The reason she chose Bear was because Bear is a name that when you leave a room, you won’t forget. And I like that.”
He added, “You know what? Now he is Bear. When I look at him, he’s just Bear. At first I wasn’t really having it. I was like, ‘I’m not really sure. I don’t really understand.’ Now I look at him and he’s Bear. You become your name as you get older anyway.”
Oh, and Bear‘s middle name? “Grey“! How cute is that?

Rumors were circulating that the little boy had been named Bear, which led adventurer and TV personality Bear Grylls took to Tweet a message of congratulations to the couple.
“Great choice! Love & blessings to you guys as you start on the greatest adventure…” Bear wrote on his Twitter.
It seems like Liam confirmed the news by replying to Bear with a thank you!
“Thanks man hope he grows with an ounce of your courage! Your [sic] a boss,” Liam responded.

The couple welcomed the baby back in March, but did not officially announce his name.
“Liam and Cheryl couldn’t decide on a name for ages and kept toing and froing between options. But they both loved Bear and settled on it a few days ago. Despite the sleepless nights, the couple are completely smitten with little Bear,” a source told the Daily Mail about the 33-year-old singer and 23-year-old One Direction-er.
Liam and Cheryl have not made an official announcement about their son’s name, so it’s possible they chose something different. Stay tuned!

The baby was born on Wednesday (March 22) and he weighed in at 7lb, 9 oz.
“My close friends and family know there are very few times when I’m left speechless… wow!” Liam started off the message.
“I’m incredibly happy to welcome our new baby boy into the world, it’s a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favourite memory I have so far,” Liam added. “I’m completely in awe of his incredible mother and how she has been the whole way through this, she’s really made my dreams come true. We haven’t named him yet but he’s already capturing hearts including mine. I feel very blessed.”
“Happy Mother’s Day everyone!” he concluded.
“On Wednesday 22nd March, Liam and I became parents to an incredibly beautiful, healthy baby boy, weighing 7lb 9 and looking like a dream. Although he still doesn’t have a name he is already stealing hearts. We are all madly in love and overwhelmingly happy with our little arrival. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers around the world. A day that now has a different meaning to me forever,” Cheryl wrote on her page.
