China Anne McClain Dishes on How 'Black Lightning' Character Jennifer Will Deal With Her Powers

We’re only a week away from the premiere of Black Lightning, which is one of the best things ever — however, we’re still wondering a bit about Jennifer’s powers.

Played by China Anne McClain, the actress opened up to press about when Jennifer would come into her powers and what her real reaction would be.

“Parents aren’t exactly supposed to keep secrets from their children….This should be an open environment where we can talk, and ‘you guys always tell me talk to you about stuff, but this is something you kept from me,’” China shared about her parents keeping her powers a secret from her.

She adds, “The girls don’t know that their father is Black Lightning…she’s just like, ‘what?!’ She feels like her world has been turned upside down and there’s some anger and some resentment there for sure.”

While we know Anissa (Nafessa Williams) will transform into Thunder, there’s no word when or how Jennifer will get her own superhero identity.

“Well, Jennifer is young, she’s a teenager, and for her getting her powers is very different than Anissa getting her powers for the first time,” China shared. “I’ve said that she’s older, she’s confident, she knows who she is at this point in her life and she’s comfortable with that. Jennifer is still trying to figure that out.”

“To have this happen to her is a huge deal, and she feels like an alien on Earth. It’s difficult for her to deal with; it’s going to be very interesting to see.”

Black Lightning will debut NEXT Tuesday, January 16th after a big premiere in Washington, D.C. this coming weekend.

The CW's 'Black Lightning' Isn't In The Arrowverse -- Here's Why

China Anne McClain leans on on-screen dad Cress Williams during their panel at the 2018 Winter TCA Press Tour held at The Langham Huntington Hotel on Sunday (January 7) in Pasadena, Calif.

The two Black Lightning stars were joined by co-stars Christine Adams, Nafessa Williams, James Remar, Damon Gupton, and Marvin Jones III, as well as showrunners Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil.

Speaking with The Wrap about the series, Salim shared that the new DC show wouldn’t be part of the Arrowverse at all.

“I say this with all due respect, but they’re not really relevant to the show that we’re doing,” he says. “The great thing that Warner Bros. and CW allowed us to do was create our own world. We really wanted folk to get to know this family before we started branching out.”

So, if China wants that crossover with The Flash…it’s going to be a little hard to do right now.

Nafessa is also pictured below at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes Party later that night with Jessica Parker Kennedy.

China Anne McClain Chats Up 'Black Lightning' Character Jennifer Pierce

China Anne McClain sits down for an intro to her character Jennifer Pierce on Black Lightning.

The 19-year-old actress and singer plays the daughter of Black Lightning and tends to get in trouble, as any normal teenager would.

“She’s still growing up, she’s still getting to know herself. She’s only 16 years old, so she’s getting in to a little bit of trouble,” China said. “Anissa, her older sister is very motherly. She just wants to make sure [Jennifer] doesn’t go through the things that you know, she went through. Anissa is just very protective over her.”

“I knew very quickly that we were going to be able to play a family easily,” she added about their chemistry. “I connected with everybody. Nafeesa, I connected with before we even got on set, like in our screen test, we were like this. We stepped on set and we were all laughing and joking around. They had to be like, “Guys, guys, focus.’”

China Anne McClain Wants 'Black Lightning' To Crossover With This Other CW Show

China Anne McClain‘s new show, Black Lightning, hasn’t even premiered yet and she already has a great idea for a DC show crossover.

Speaking with TVGuide, the 19-year-old actress revealed that she wants The Flash to come on the new series.

“If I could race Flash…it wouldn’t be much of a race,” she laughs. “That would be so cool.”

China adds, gushing over the superhero played by Grant Gustin, “You’re just awesome, okay Grant? So just come on our show.”

Christine Adams, who plays China‘s on-screen mom, Lynn, says it would be Supergirl for her.

“I’d love to see her in the show just because I think we are – really, this show is about the girls,” she shared. That’s ultimately where we kind of want to take it. We want young women to feel empowered, so it feels like Supergirl would be a really good fit. I’d love to see the three of them together, kicking some butt.”

Black Lightning premieres NEXT WEEK on Tuesday, January 16th @ 9PM ET/PT on The CW.
