The first season of Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger just had its’ season finale last week and we already have our first teaser poster – plus a ton of new details on what’s ahead.
Showrunner Joe Pokaski opened up in a lot of detail about the ending of the finale, where we see Detective Brigid O’Reilly (Emma Lahana) climb out of the swamp after being shot – and she just doesn’t look like herself at all.
“We see someone that looks a lot like O’Reilly coming out of the water so that’s obviously something we’re leaning into from the Cloak & Dagger mythology,” he told THR, adding that while she was a friend in season one, she might not be in season two.
“It’s been interesting for us to set up Brigid O’Reilly as the friend to Cloak and Dagger in season one and then in season two she will be something slightly different,” he says.
He also spoke to Vulture about her transformation and says that just because she looks evil doesn’t mean she’s definitely the villain.
“The Cloak and Dagger lore is kind of scattershot, but one of the most interesting things is the idea of a friend and confidante that turns evil-ish,” Joe shared. “So the writers and I were very excited about having season one be a down-low origin story of a villain.”
“When Emma Lahana came on board and we saw that she could do anything, it was more exciting to write to her skills, and to create this three-dimensional character that we could take everything away from and see what we ended up with.”
Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger will return on Freeform in 2019.
Now, showrunner Joe Pokaski is opening up about what’s coming next with the second season.
“In season 2, you can take those training wheels off,” he shared with EW. “The most exciting thing is now we have these two characters, played by these two ridiculously talented actors, and we get to explore how you become a vigilante hopefully in a way that other superhero fiction hasn’t done yet.”
He continues, “If you do have this power to make a knife of light or teleport, how do you make the world a better place? How do you go about doing it? Where do you find trouble? How does it affect your life? I think we got to kick into high gear with the last couple episodes [of season 1], and we’ll be able to shift into a higher speed a little quicker in season 2.”
The biggest challenge that Tandy and Tyrone will face is “How do you become a vigilante?”
Joe also added that the “post-credits sequence kind of tees up the first challenge they’re going to face as they now have a responsibility to help people.”
In “Back Breaker”, when triumph turns sour, both Tandy (Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) regress back to their old ways. But after everything that has happened, and actions that have been set into motion, can they truly go back to the way things once were? Meanwhile, Det. O’Reilly (Emma Lahana) tries to deal with the recent fall out.
