Grace VanderWaal to Emerging Musicians Everywhere: 'Don't Try and Be A Pop Star. Be Yourself'

Grace VanderWaal to Emerging Musicians Everywhere: 'Don't Try and Be A Pop Star. Be Yourself'

Grace VanderWaal is doing pretty well for herself at just 13-years-old.

The former AGT champ just put out her first album, Just The Beginning, and is currently on a small tour around the country for it.

Speaking with Time, Grace opened up about writing her album and how much power she had inside the studio.

“I definitely have confidence. Especially because I’m a woman, and especially because I’m really young,” she shared. “People are extra nice and extra open to all your ideas, because they want to make sure they’re not pinned as the mean producer or whatever.”

Grace also offered some sage advice for anyone trying to break into the music industry now and it’s advice that you can use in every walk of life.

“Just be yourself. I’ve met so many people and seen so many online that are just trying to be this pop star. And honestly, they would probably be a lot more successful if they were just themselves, because people can sense that.”

Grace VanderWaal Shared The Secret About That Clicking Sound on 'City Song'

Grace VanderWaal‘s debut album, Just The Beginning, came out a week ago and we don’t know about you, but it’s one of the best we’ve heard all year.

Since we’ve been listening to it non-stop, we picked up on some tendencies throughout the record — like that clicking sound on “City Song”.

Speaking with Chicago Sun Times, Grace revealed what exactly that is — her retainer!

“There’s this little clicky noise on the second verse; that was my retainer case I was clicking to the beat of the song,” she revealed.

Grace continued, opening up about how she’s still trying to find her specific sound.

“I’m still experimenting with my sound,” she says. “I honestly don’t know what I like yet.”

Grace adds, “This album is the first time where I’m actually putting true produced music behind what I’m singing. A lot of elements from different genres were pulled into the album and I think it invites everyone into my journey.”

Psst! Want to meet Grace this weekend? She’ll be having a signing event at Charming Charlie’s 5th Avenue Flagship Store in New York City from 1-4pm.

Grace VanderWaal‘s debut album is HERE!!!!

The America’s Got Talent winner released her new album tonight, which includes 12 songs — nine that she personally wrote.

However, she says that writing it was actually kind of awkward.

“It was awkward,” Grace admits about writing her first album to TRL. “Just because I’ve never written an album before.”

She added that even going in the studio was kind of weird: “Just going into the studio and saying ‘Hi, nice to meet you. Let’s write a song’. But, I’m just glad I finally get to release it.”
