CW President Mark Pedowitz Reveals What Really Happened With 'Green Arrow & The Canaries'

We are getting some answers on why the Arrow spinoff Green Arrow & The Canaries didn’t move forward at The CW.

The network’s president Mark Pedowitz opened up about what really happened with the potential series.

“Timing. We couldn’t quite figure out a model similar to Stargirl and couldn’t quite get there,” he said, via THR. “We were hoping to have it start at HBO Max and take a second run on The CW, but we couldn’t figure out how to do it and couldn’t make it all work.”

In case you forgot, Stargirl actually first premiered on the DC Comics streaming service, and would then air the next day on The CW. Since, the show was picked up for season two at The CW and the DC streaming platform eventually folded into HBO Max.

If you missed it, the show, which would have starred Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy, was officially “passed on” last week.

Katherine expressed that she was definitely bummed about the news. See what she said!

Katherine McNamara is reacting to the sad news that Green Arrow and the Canaries is not moving forward.

On Friday (January 8), it was revealed that the Arrow spinoff was being passed on by The CW.

After the news was announced, Katherine took to Twitter to share her thoughts that her show has essentially been cancelled.

“Needless to say, I am heartbroken… would’ve loved to go on the journey with #MiaSmoak. Thanks to everyone for their love and support,” she shared, along with a photo.

Katherine was set to star in the series as Mia Smoak, the daughter of Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak. She was also taking over as the new Green Arrow, and fighting crime alongside Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) and Dinah Drake (Juliana Harkavy) as The Canaries.

The Arrow spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries has officially been canned at The CW.

Fans of the possible series have been awaiting news on whether it will be picked up for months.

Green Arrow and the Canaries aired as a backdoor pilot during Arrow‘s final season, starring Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak/Green Arrow, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance and Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake.

With the official news on the spinoff, this marks the end of Arrow. Katherine has previously said that she’s not done with Mia Smoak and would still put on the suit whenever, if asked.

Though Green Arrow and the Canaries is not moving forward, there are other DC Comics series in the works at The CW – Find out about Naomi, Wonder Girl, and Painkiller.

Katherine McNamara Knows As Much As Us On Status of 'Green Arrow & The Canaries'

Katherine McNamara Knows As Much As Us On Status of 'Green Arrow & The Canaries'

Katherine McNamara doesn’t have any update on the Green Arrow & The Canaries spinoff series!

The 24-year-old actress, along with Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy, filmed a backdoor pilot for an Arrow spinoff, but there’s still no word on the status of the possible show.

Katherine was recently asked if she knew anything, and she’s just as much in the dark as everyone else!

“I have no updates… I know, I feel the same way,” she told TooFab. “COVID has unfortunately thrown a monkey wrench into everyone’s timeline, and, you know, they’ve had so much to figure out with how to even possibly make TV anymore.”

“So, um, we’ll see. You know, I’m far from done with Mia Smoak, and so if there’s ever an opportunity to put on the Arrow suit again, I’m 100% in,” Katherine added. “Whether that’s Green Arrows & The Canaries, or popping in and out of the other [Arrowverse] series, or next crossover, or whatever it is. I’m not done with Mia Smoak yet.”

'Arrow' Producer Shares What Would Happen If 'Green Arrow & The Canaries' Doesn't Get Picked Up

'Arrow' Producer Shares What Would Happen If 'Green Arrow & The Canaries' Doesn't Get Picked Up

Green Arrow & The Canaries producer Marc Guggenheim is speaking out about the spinoff.

The producer recently opened up about what would happen to the possible new show and those characters if it doesn’t get picked up.

“Certainly, the backdoor pilot ended with the cliffhanger of William’s abduction. And I do think we owe answers to a lot of those moments and questions,” he told TV Line.

“My instinct would be to try to answer those questions in the form of, like, a comic book tie-in — which is not to say that it couldn’t be done on the other shows,” Marc continued. “When you’re dealing with another time period, the year 2040 in this case, the only show that could handle that or really deal with those questions is Legends [of Tomorrow]. [But that] is a tricky bit of business, since the tonal mashup between Legends and Canaries is so very different. On the other hand, you’ve got Sara, who is sort of the connective glue there….”

“I look at these things as ‘quality problems,” he added. “I love the fact that we now have a universe of shows that allows us to ask ourselves these questions and explore different things and answer questions from different shows, but we also have comic books as an outlet, as well.”

Will There Be a 'Katy Keene' Season 2?

The Katy Keene season one finale just aired and many are wondering if there will be a second season.

While no decision has been made yet, there is hope for a season two.

Earlier today (May 14), The CW President Mark Pedowitz said that they have extended the options for the cast to return.

“The linear ratings have been soft but we have seen some good streaming viewership,” he added, via Deadline. “We’ll make a decision in a few weeks.”

So, if you want more Katy Keene, be sure to stream the show online as much as you can, and be sure to also stream it when it comes out on upcoming service HBO Max.

Other shows that are up in the air include the Arrow spinoff, Green Arrow & The Canaries starring Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy, and The 100 prequel series.

There are “active discussions” with the studio about Green Arrow and the Canaries according to the exec, but it has not yet been ordered to series. That and The 100 prequel series are “very much alive.”
