Haley Lu Richardson is paying tribute to the inspiration behind her new movie, Five Feet Apart.
In a new Instagram, the 24-year-old actress introduced her fans to Claire Wineland, who was one of the main inspirations for the film, directed by her friend, Justin Baldoni.
“I got to spend a handful of hours with Claire Wineland before we started filming @FiveFeetApartFilm. She was the wisest soul in the youngest, smallest body of anyone I’ve ever met,” Haley writes.
She continues, “I’ll always remember her telling me that when you have Cystic Fibrosis there comes a time when you stop living for your treatments and you start doing your treatments so that you can live. We added that as a line in the movie. I think those words are the heart of the story and I’ll hold on to them forever as a reminder that the point of life is for it to be lived.”
Claire sadly passed away last year after a lung transplant.
“Thank you, Claire,” Haley added. “If you are inspired, do some extra research about CF and donate to @clairesplacefoundation (which is a continuation of her legacy) or to @cf_foundation.”
The Five Feet Apart actors appeared on Busy Tonight on Monday night (March 18).
During their appearance, the two talked about what it was like working on their new film together, and what they did to have fun along the way.
Cole also opened up about his relationship to the late Luke Perry: “I mean we were very close to him. In the 26 years I’ve been doing this, he is a person I have never heard a single bad thing said about, which is an incredibly impressive thing the longer you’re in this,” he said.
Haley also dished on how she proposed to her boyfriend. And Cole also reminisced about his days on Friends as little Ben!
Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse are one of our fave new on-screen couples, since the premiere of their new movie, Five Feet Apart.
The 24-year-old actress recently spoke to ET about their “instantaneous” chemistry.
Haley recalls that they “both just really cared about doing a good job, and doing justice to these characters, and making it as grounded and lived in as possible…he’s a nice, cool guy in real life, so I think it’s one of those things where if both people are willing to commit to telling the story properly and believing the words they are saying, then it kind of happens.”
She also opened up about the intimacy in the movie, that instead of Will and Stella falling in love by touch, it’s by emotion instead.
“There’s no sex scene in the movie. There’s no big make-out scene. They genuinely fall in love because they have this connection,” Haley says. “I’m sure they are physically attracted [to each other] and they find the way they look in their bodies beautiful…It’s about their vulnerability, and how they show each other in other ways to one another, and that’s what’s beautiful. That’s what’s refreshing and innocent, and kind of awkward.”
Haley Lu Richardson is opening up about the responsibility of playing a character with cystic fibrosis in her new film, Five Feet Apart.
Speaking with EW, the 24-year-old actress revealed that she was hesitant to take on the role of Stella.
“I ended up having this big talk with Justin [Baldoni, director] and he really opened my eyes to the opportunity of making the characters as human as possible,” Haley shared. “Even though there’s this kind of magical love story and these extreme odds, having the chance to come in as an actor and make the character and the dialogue grounded and real within that big magical world is actually really interesting to me and something that I hadn’t really gotten to do before.”
She added about the responsibility of learning about the disease that she “felt like I had to do justice to this whole group of people who have CF, like 30,000 people in America. It’s something that a lot of people struggle with and know people that struggle with, but it’s not some mainstream thing that everyone is aware of.”
“So there was a responsibility to do it right and do my research and be as medically accurate and as emotionally accurate with what these people go through, and be someone that that CF community can look at onscreen and really relate to and say, ‘Wow, I was represented in a way that I recognize and can be proud of,’” Haley added.
“Once I started getting into it and learning about CF and meeting people with CF, it opened my eyes to how real it all was. It ended up just being a really inspiring thing to be a part of.”
