The 17-year-old Dora and the Lost City of Gold actress opened up with the digital mag about how representation matters behind the camera, as well as the hopes for her future.
On why representation behind the camera is so important: “Those people are the ones making the decisions, and it’s up to them to choose whether or not to look at only Caucasian actresses, black actresses or Hispanics. Even writers will write what they know. I don’t blame the writers because they don’t know my culture, [but] by including more [diverse] writers, that will make it easier, because you’re just speaking your truth.”
On what she would change about Hollywood: “I dislike the praise that comes with being someone who is minorly successful in the industry and wish we were treated like regular people with jobs. […] I wish [acting] were considered a normal job.”
On her hopes for her career in the future: “I want to be able to play any kind of Meryl Streep-type situation, because she’s so versatile. My one goal in my career is to confuse people – I never want to be put in a box.”

The 17-year-old actress is opening up about her adorable canine companion, her upcomingDora the Explorer movie, and more. Check it:
On portraying Dora: “I’ve been called Dora my whole life. It was this ongoing joke between my friends and me that I was Dora—I had the bangs, I’d teach them Spanish. It’s crazy how life works out.”
On her music career: “Acting has always been fun for me, but I still feel like I haven’t found a place where I fit in, and that sounds really sad. But I think it’s because I consider myself more of a musician. That’s where I find true creativity and where I really let myself go. And I get so terrifyingly scared when I play people my music. I write it, I produce it and I sing it. The entire message is by me, and it’s so personal. But I have a lot that I want to say.”
On her rescue dog, Pluto: “He’s got three legs, but he doesn’t let that define him because he’s got a good soul, you know? Pluto is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
