Hannah Survived in '13 Reasons Why' Original Book Version, Author Jay Asher Reveals

Hannah Survived in '13 Reasons Why' Original Book Version, Author Jay Asher Reveals

Before books are published, they go through many different phases — first drafts, second drafts, final edits…the list keeps going.

So it’s not really a surprise that in one version of “13 Reasons Why”, Hannah survives.

“I liked the idea of ‘We’ve learned something from this. And yet, here’s a second chance,’” author Jay Asher revealed about the original ending. “Knowing as well that it was going to be difficult when Hannah went back to school to have to deal with those kids.”

“It’s not like everything’s smooth now. In fact, it might be even tenser for her. But now there’s Clay, who’s going to be upfront that he’s there for her.”

But once Jay re-read the final edits he made, he changed his mind.

“Out of seriousness for the issue, we realized we can’t go there,” he adds. “No matter that there were missed opportunities for her. Those opportunities aren’t there if you do this.”

He continued, “Once I realized that the message of the story would be stronger and that it would definitely be more of a cautionary tale. I felt that was definitely the way to go. That’s why Skye’s character made a reappearance, which was cool to see her have a bigger role throughout the TV series.”

13 Reasons Why is currently streaming on Netflix.

'13 Reasons Why' Author Explains Clay's Tape

'13 Reasons Why' Author Explains Clay's Tape

Do you still have a lot of questions after finishing your binge-watch of 13 Reasons Why? Don’t worry, us too.

The author of the novel the show is based upon is opening up about Clay’s tape in particular.

For example, why was Clay on the tapes and why is his the only one positive story?

“When I first started writing Clay’s character, I didn’t even know what he was going to do,” writer Jay Asher told EW. “I knew the 12 other reasons, but I didn’t know his. I realized, obviously, that that’s what people are going to be waiting for.”

He added, “One, if what he did was really bad, the second he got the tapes he would go, ‘I know I’m on here.’ There goes all the suspense. Clay is also the eyes and ears for the reader. That’s the person you’re connecting with. It would have totally changed the reading experience in a negative way if all of a sudden you’re disgusted with this person you’ve been following so closely.”

WHAT DID YOU THINK of Clay as a character?

The Most Important Part of Lily Collins' New Book Is in The Resources Section

The Most Important Part of Lily Collins' New Book Is in The Resources Section

Lily Collins‘ new book, “Unfiltered”, is finally out and it only took the JJJ Book Club two hours to read it all.

The Last Tycoon star opens up about her mom Jill‘s support, forgiving her father Phil, her loves, likes and quirks, emotional abuse, and more.

One of the big issues Lily does talk about in her book is of her eating disorders and addictions. While many of us thought, it was just anorexia and bulimia Lily suffered from in the past, we were very wrong.

“My diet pill and laxative addiction also started when I was around 16 and continued into my early 20s,” Lily confesses.

“I knew my mom would never be okay with them, so I started secretly buying them at drugstores and hiding them all over my room.”
