13 Reasons Why's Katherine Langford Is A Die-Hard Trekkie!

The moment we heard Selena Gomez gush over how perfect Katherine Langford was for the part of Hannah in 13 Reasons Why, we knew we’d love her just as much — and we did!

Now, we’re falling in love with her all over again because she’s just as much a sci-fi geek as we are!

In a recent profile piece in Marie Claire, Katherine opened up about her sci-fi love and just how big of a Trekkie she is.

She gushed, “I love Star Trek: Voyager! I’m rewatching the series right now.”

“I love sci-fi and period pieces—it’s fantasy. I can let myself dream a little bit,” Katherine adds. “But also, I just really love science. I love knowing about how the world works.”

She already knows was superpower she wants: “A third lung. The Klingon anatomy has a third lung. It would be supercool being able to run and literally never get tired. It’s like Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl performance—that kind of endurance!”

Katherine‘s family even has a boat named Voyager.

“My dad is a really keen fisherman, and when we got a boat, we named it Voyager and got T-shirts made with the Voyager logo,” she boasts. “Whenever we go out, we wear those. OK—I sound like a total nerd!”

Katherine Langford Says '13 Reasons Why' Is The Best First Job

Katherine Langford is opening off more about having 13 Reasons Why as her first job ever.

“I think it was the best first show I could have ever done,” she shared in an interview with Deadline. “In a lot of ways, the hardest—purely because of the journey that Hannah goes through, and the magnitude of the show itself.”

Good thing she had a handful of great directors to work with too, like Tom McCarthy.

“[He] was really helpful—he’s so intelligent, and has excellent ideas and a wonderful vision for the work that we did.”

Katherine added, “A lot of the advice that he gave me after Episodes 1 and 2, I found myself carrying throughout the entire season. ‘Keep it light, because there’s a long way to go’ was one thing he said, and that really did stick with me throughout the course of the season, in telling Hannah’s story.”

“I feel like I learned a lot, not just as an actor, but also from a director point of view. It was fascinating to watch.”

13 Reasons Why season one is streaming on Netflix now.

13 Reasons Why has been making headlines since even before it premiered.

Star Katherine Langford is glad it did, too.

“There have been so many really personal and incredible responses, is because it resonates as something that is true, or feels like something that is real, and is happening,” she shared.

She adds, “I think one of the best things that the show has done, from what I’ve heard and what I’ve seen, is it’s started a discussion in a really big way.”

With discussion, there can be change.

“The show may not necessarily be the change,” Katherine knows. “But if it can be the instigator for that kind of discussion, then that’s where I find that it’s helpful.”

Katherine Langford Opens Up About How She Handles '13 Reasons Why' Critics

13 Reasons Why has caused many discussions since it premiered in March.

There have been fans, and health professionals speaking out against the show, saying it romanticizes suicide instead of creating a positive discussion.

Katherine Langford disagrees.

“There have been measures in aftercare, which is something that Netflix and the show didn’t need to do,” she points out. “It’s a testament to the vision that the creators had for this show, to tell it in the most authentic way possible, but then also recognize that it could have a significant impact.”

She adds, “We do a 30-minute Beyond the Reasons, kind of debriefing after Episode 13. There are trigger warnings, and there are articles.”

Katherine is proud to be a part of the show, no matter what the critics may say.

“I also understand that when you do a show that covers really serious, personal and relevant issues, there’s going to be a difference of opinion,” she says.

“I think that difference of opinions and discussion is the important part, and it’s where the show makes a difference, being able to talk about things and share opinions, and the reasons why we think that way.”

Katherine Langford Reveals Her '13 Reasons Why' Audition

We’ve all heard the stories on the mission to cast Hannah Baker for Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, and Katherine Langford came just at the right time.

In a recent interview, the Australian actress revealed just how she auditioned for the part — which ended being her first ever part in her first ever show.

“I had just started taking my first screen acting classes the year before when I turned 18, and at the end of that year, I signed with my US managers,” she starts.

Katherine recalled that she had already tested for two other network projects that she didn’t get.

“I had given up drama school to go and test for them, so I was back home in Perth with no job, trying to figure out what I was going to do with my year,” she adds.

“That’s when the audition came through. I put down a tape, one thing led to another, and they cast me.”

13 Reasons Why is currently filming season two.

Katherine Langford and Dylan Minnette are back on the 13 Reasons Why set, preparing themselves for a brand new season of the hit Netflix series.

But just before Katherine headed there, she spoke about Dylan and her hopes for season two.

“[He’s] the best first on-screen partner I could ever imagine working with,” Katherine said of Dylan, who plays Clay Jensen. “I also learned a lot from him, which I’m thankful for because he is so great in what he does.”

As for season two, which is set to premiere next year on the streaming service, Katherine is excited for it to play out.

“I think it will give us the opportunity to continue the dialogue on things that are important,” she shared. “It will be a different story, but I think it will carry on the importance of what we did in the first season.”
