Yara Shahidi Developing New Freeform Comedy 'Smoakland' With Mom Keri

Yara Shahidi and her mom Keri are working on bringing a new comedy series to the small screen!

It was just announced that the mother-daughter duo are developing Smoakland for Freeform through their 7th Sun Productions company, in partnership with ABC Signature.

“In case you wondering what we’ve been up to šŸ‘€ … Proud #TEAM7THSUNMOMENT,” Yara wrote on Instagram in all caps.

The new series was written by Jewel Coronel, and “centers around Oakland native Solo, the visionary of a budding cannabis company, who navigates family expectations, changing friendships, love, and her drive to break through the ā€œgrassā€ ceiling of the oft-closed terrain of the cannabis industry for herself and her community,” according to Deadline.

Jewel will also executive produce, alongside Zahir McGhee and the Shahidis.

Back in July 2020, it was announced that Yara and Keri had signed an overall deal with ABC Studios to form 7th Sun. They will “develop and produce scripted and alternative television projects for cable, streaming and broadcast.ā€

The grown-ish star and her mom Keri are forming their own production company called 7th Sun as part of the deal, Variety reports.

The mother-daughter duo will “develop and produce scripted and alternative television projects for cable, streaming and broadcast.”

ā€œIā€™m thrilled to be partnering with my home family, ABC Studios, in this exciting next chapter, alongside my family,ā€ Yara dished. ā€œItā€™s exciting to add our production company to the roster of my peers and mentors who are also actively committed to sharing meaningful stories.ā€

ā€œWe canā€™t wait to extend and expand our relationship with the incredibly talented Yara Shahidi, who has been a member of the family since black-ish,ā€ ABC Studios president Jonnie Davis said in a statement. ā€œWhen sheā€™s not studying at Harvard and starring in our series grown-ish, sheā€™s mentoring and inspiring other young people, which makes us all feel like underachievers but also very proud that sheā€™s part of our Studio.ā€

Yara currently stars in and serves as a producer on her Freeform series grown-ish, and she was also a co-executive producer on the short film Hair Love.

The mother-daughter opened up about their outlook on life, being together on set and making each other proud. Check it:

Yara on having her mom on set: “Iā€™ve had the good fortune of having you by my side for everything. Others donā€™t have a parent on set with them. I remember starting Black-ish and having high-def makeup on all day, a strip of eyelashes. Thereā€™s a weird correlation that happens between being ā€˜readyā€™ and being doused in makeup. Weā€™ve had conversations about separating the two.”

Keri on what makes her proud of Yara: “[Iā€™m happiest] that sheā€™s the most compassionate human being I know. She has a sense that her voice matters all the time, in every situation.”

Yara on their outlook on life: “We say yes more than anything.”
