KJ Apa Replaces Kian Lawley in 'The Hate U Give'

KJ Apa Replaces Kian Lawley in 'The Hate U Give'

KJ Apa is stepping into Kian Lawley‘s role in The Hate U Give, Deadline reports.

The Riverdale star will take over Kian‘s role, after Kian was fired for derogatory remarks he made in an old video that resurfaced.

KJ will play the privileged boyfriend to Amandla Stenberg‘s Starr Carter in the film, who witnesses her best friend get murdered by a police officer.

His character “never concerned himself with the different skin color of the girlfriend he adores, and knows little about her life back home. Until she becomes the only witness in the police shooting, and becomes increasingly political as she grieves the death of her friend Khalil. It awakens him to how deeply race impacts their relationship.”

Issa Rae, Regina King, Sabrina Carpenter also star. The reshoots are filming in Atlanta now.

Kian Lawley Returns To YouTube With Honest Video After Being Fired From 'The Hate U Give'

Kian Lawley is back on YouTube with a new and honest video after being fired from The Hate U Give.

If you remember, the digital influencer and actor was let go from his new movie, and dropped by CAA, for derogatory comments he made in a five-year-old video that resurfaced.

“I said some words about five years ago that I should’ve never said, and no one should ever say,” Kian begins. “My words hurt a lot of people and it’s something I regret and it’s something that I wish I could take back.”

He continues, “In these past few weeks, I’ve taken time to focus, reflect and review myself…it made me realize that I’m in a constant struggle to become a better me than I was yesterday.”

Kian also explains that he’s hoping to change his outlook on life and how he can influence himself, and his followers, to be better people.

“I’ve also come to a realization, a very strong, vivid, awakening realization that I do have a voice…and I want to use my voice to spread love, light, peace and positivity. I think and I hope that it does help a lot of people, including myself.”

Kian Lawley has been dropped by CAA, THR reports.

The digital influencer and actor was fired just yesterday from his upcoming movie, The Hate U Give, after an old video with him saying racist comments resurfaced.

Kian was signed to CAA in 2015.

“I am fully aware of the mistakes I have made and strive every day to become a better me than I was yesterday,” Kian shared in an apology earlier today.

“We all have a voice, whether it’s big or small, we need to use it to spread love & light. From now on, I plan to use my voice for positive change.”

Kian Lawley is trying to make up for his past mistakes and has issued an apology on social media for his actions.

“First of all, I am deeply sorry to those that were effected by my choice of language,” the actor and digital influencer wrote. “I understand that I am in the public eye & have many supporters, but none of my actions that took place should be supported. Words have power and can do a lot damage. I own mine and I am sorry.”

Kian continues, “I respect Fox’s decision to recast this role for The Hate U Give as it is an important story, and it would not be appropriate for me to be involved considering the actions of my past. I understand the impact and I have grown a lot and learned since then.

“With that being said, I am fully aware of the mistakes I have made and strive every day to become a better me than I was yesterday. We all have a voice, whether it’s big or small, we need to use it to spread love & light. From now on, I plan to use my voice for positive change.”

Last night, news broke that Kian had been fired from The Hate U Give after an old video with him saying derogatory and racist remarks re-surfaced.

Kian Lawley has been dropped from the upcoming movie The Hate U Give following his racist remarks featured in a resurfaced video.

Twentieth Century Fox will now be giving the Zac and Mia star’s role to another actor.

“Due to the controversy surrounding his past comments and behavior, Kian Lawley will no longer appear in The Hate U Give. The studio plans to recast the role of Chris and reshoot scenes as needed,” a spokesperson for the studio told Variety.

In the clip, Kian can be heard speaking the N-word and other racial slurs. “We’re all black drinking purple Kool-aid and eating Kentucky fried motherf–king chicken,” he says. (The video, which contains offensive language, can be seen in full here).

Kian was originally going to play the boyfriend of the movie’s lead actress, Amandla Stenberg. Based on Angela Thomas‘ novel of the same name, focusing on race and police brutality, the film also stars Issa Rae, Regina Hall, Russell Hornsby, Algee Smith, Lamar Johnson, and Common.
