KJ Apa Had to 'Unlearn' His Musical Skills For 'Riverdale'

KJ Apa Had to 'Unlearn' His Musical Skills For 'Riverdale'

Most of us know that for his audition for Riverdale, KJ Apa took a guitar inside the casting room and played “Mary Had a Little Lamb”.

Speaking with The Last magazine, the actor opened up about how Archie is actually quite a beginner compared to his personal skills.

“I don’t know how to say it, but we’re not at the same level, you know what I mean?” he says. “Somehow I have to say that in not a cocky way, but he’s a beginner.”

KJ adds that “the songs that [Archie] writes, I don’t think I would listen to them. I do not have the same taste in music as him.”

If you’re a fan of KJ, you know that he often posts covers on his Instagram Stories and his favorite bands are Van Halen and Third Eye Blind, among others.

“I listen to a bit of everything, but mostly classic rock and punk rock,” he says. “I’m into harder stuff than Archie is.”

Riverdale airs on Wednesdays on The CW.

KJ Apa Says Things Are Going to Get 'Gnarly' Between Archie & Veronica on 'Riverdale' This Season

KJ Apa Says Things Are Going to Get 'Gnarly' Between Archie & Veronica on 'Riverdale' This Season

Like the rest of the world, we at JJJ are deep into Riverdale this season — and we can’t wait to watch the Varchie and Bughead ships evolve.

In a hilarious new video for Elle, KJ Apa reads fan conspiracy theories and shares his thoughts on them.

“Yeah, it’s definitely some gnarliness between Archie and Veronica to come for sure,” he answers a fan worried about their favorite ship.

Uh oh!

KJ also reveals that he has no idea what’s going to happen with the Sabrina crossover, Cheryl Blossom and Toni Topaz are not getting together this season, and he’s never seen Stranger Things.

KJ Apa Says The Archie-Betty-Veronica Love Triangle Will Be Revisited Many Times on 'Riverdale'

KJ Apa Says The Archie-Betty-Veronica Love Triangle Will Be Revisited Many Times on 'Riverdale'

KJ Apa has more than likely had his share of who Archie should actually be with on Riverdale — a question he’s kind of steered clear of in the past.

Speaking with The Last Magazine, the New Zealander actor opened up about the Archie-Betty-Veronica triangle and says that the show will probably tackle that many times.

At the moment, Archie is with Veronica…but it all could change within the course of an episode or two.

“It’s a fundamental part of the Archie universe and I don’t think that’s ever going to be lost on our show,” he says. “I think we’ll definitely revisit it a few times.”

KJ adds, “I think it’s more interesting how we portray that love triangle than how the comics do because we get the details of everything. We know why one person isn’t with another person because of what happened in this episode.”

“There’s a lot of history behind it and it’s going to become more interesting in the following seasons because the longer we go, the more history there is and the more important that love triangle is going to become.”

KJ Apa Put Madelaine Petsch's Needs Ahead of His Own While filming 'Riverdale's Season One Finale

KJ Apa Put Madelaine Petsch's Needs Ahead of His Own While filming 'Riverdale's Season One Finale

The cast of Riverdale is seriously one of the best casts.

While speaking to Marie Claire, Madelaine Petsch opened up about filming the final scenes for the season one finale — you know, the one where she plunges into a frozen lake and Archie bangs open the ice on the lake to rescue her.

Madelaine shared the story about how, even though KJ Apa‘s hand was broken then, he still put her needs first.

“It shows you what kind of person KJ is — we were waiting between one part of the scene and another, and his hand was already broken but he didn’t know yet,” she shares. “We were freezing cold.”

Madelaine adds, “I remember KJ picked me up and held me and a location guy put a heated blanket on me, and everyone crowded around me breathing on me to keep me warm. That just shows you what kind of people I work with. We genuinely care about each other.”

On top of that, remember the scene where Cheryl spits water on Archie? KJ‘s hand was broken then too.

“That was such a big day for all of us — KJ broke his hand during filming, so we only had one take of everything that night,” she says. “He hurt himself and then they were like, ‘Okay, we got one take and then we gotta go.’”

“We had one take for me to hold the water and spit it on him—it became very serious very quickly.”

KJ Apa Reveals That He Actually Wanted To Be an Accountant Before Becoming an Actor

KJ Apa Reveals That He Actually Wanted To Be an Accountant Before Becoming an Actor

Some wanted to be doctors, or lawyers before getting bit by the acting bug, but for KJ Apa, it was accounting.

Speaking with The Last Magazine in a new feature, the Riverdale star revealed that he actually did think accounting was his future.

“I wanted to be an accountant for a long time,” he laughs. “I wanted to play rugby and music was also a massive part of my life, but thinking realistically, I thought I’d go to university and study business and be an accountant.”

But, he took a detour to a modeling agency (where his mom worked) and ended up on New Zealand’s Shortland Street instead.

“I pretty much learned everything that I know on that show,” KJ adds. “I had no idea about the industry, I had no idea how things worked on set, I had no idea how to act, so it was a massive learning curve for me. It forced me to grow up pretty fast.”

If KJ ended up as an accountant, we’d have a massive portfolio.

Camila Mendes & KJ Apa Get Real About Filming That Steamy Shower Scene

Camila Mendes & KJ Apa Get Real About Filming That Steamy Shower Scene

Riverdale fans have been waiting to watch the development of Varchie (Veronica & Archie) in season two, and the premiere gave the people what they wanted in the form of a steamy shower scene.

Of course, as passionate as the scene looks, it wasn’t exactly romantic to film.

“Like, we just wanted to spit [the water] all out, but we had to make out, so we were just like plegh!” Camila Mendes laughed to Entertainment Tonight. “[It was] the funniest moment — It was a lot of fun!”

“It was pretty slippery in there,” KJ Apa added. “They had a fog machine in the actual bathtub.”

“We would just start cracking up laughing because none of [the crew members] were allowed to look at us while we were unclothed. But yeah, it was funny.”

Also, since Camila and KJ are such good friends, it had to be a little bit awkward! We’re glad they were able to laugh through the uncomfortable moments.
