“It’s about coming home having been on tour, soon after the band had split. I found some of my girlfriend’s clothes in the cupboard and it hit me what I’d done. I love the indie sound of the song and its circular nature –it opens and closes with the same lyric,” Louis says of the track.
“I pretend not to be romantic, but I am. It really hit home when I was in the studio to hear the strings being recorded. There must have been 25 musicians in there, all for my song. It was a proper tear-jerking moment already and I’ve never felt a shiver like it.”
Louis Tomlinson‘s new song “Walls” is about overcoming obstacles.
The former One Direction member released the final single and title track from his debut album on Friday (January 17).
On it, he talks about the hardships of life and relationships, and how they can eventually make you stronger.
“But these high walls, they came up short / Now I stand taller than them all,” he sings. “These high walls never broke my soul / And I, I watch them all come fallin’ down / I watch them all come fallin’ down for you, for you.”
The 27-year-old singer recently explained how he transitioned from being surrounded by your band mates to being a solo artist.
“It took some getting used to. One Direction such a well working thing…As you spend time on your own, you find new people you get on with and develop those relationships,” Louis told Glamour.
He continued, “It took me a kind of second to understand that I was on my own now and my identity for so long was part of a collective and you obviously still have an individual identity within that. So I think it took me a second to realize I can be a bit of a chav again and just be me and not have to worry about anything else.”
The 27-year-old singer explained that his song “We Made It” started out being about touring but transitioned into a song about dating Eleanor while he was in One Direction.
“Oh my, I remember those nights / Meet you at your uni’, cheap drinks / Drink ‘em all night / Staying out ’til sunrise / Share a single bed and tell each other what we dream about,” Louis sings on the track.
“It’s kind of about two things because we started out with just the title and what it meant to me in that moment was me picturing our first show of the tour and all the hard work it took me to get there and with the fans, it’s a collective, we made it here together, and that’s how the song started out,” he Pedestrian.
Louis continued, “And then in the verse you have to add a bit more of a story so we’re talking about me going to visit my girlfriend at the university halls while I was on tour with the boys, so I was going off that dynamic.”
