'Riverdale' Season Four Premiere Will Pay Tribute to Luke Perry

'Riverdale' Season Four Premiere Will Pay Tribute to Luke Perry

Luke Perry will be remembered in the season premiere of Riverdale.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced that season four will kick off with a tribute episode to Luke and his character Fred Andrews.

“Probably the most important episode of #Riverdale we’ll do this year, if not ever. A tribute to our fallen friend. Thankful for this opportunity to honor Luke & Fred. ❤️🏆💎👨🏻‍💻” Robert tweeted.

Luke‘s last appearance on Riverdale aired back in April and the absence of his character has not been addressed on screen yet.

Luke passed away in March after suffering a stroke.

Riverdale season 4 premieres October 9 on The CW.

How will Riverdale address Luke Perry‘s absence on the show?

Creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told ET that Fred Andrews’ absence will be explained at the beginning of season four, after the actor sadly passed away due to a massive stroke.

“We knew we had to honor Luke and address Luke‘s death on the show,” Roberto said. “When Luke had passed, we had already pretty much plotted out the end of this season and written the end of this season. Rather than try to squeeze something in and potentially not get it right, we thought let’s take a beat and let’s figure out really what would be the best way to honor Luke and to honor the character of Fred, and let’s do it at the top of season four.”

Roberto added that they “have an idea” about how to address it, but “honestly though, things may change over the next month and I’d rather not say for fear of it changing.”

“Luckily, Molly [Ringwald] was already slated to come, so we kind of just reflected and wanted to give ourselves the time to do those things right,” he continued. “We love Molly and we always love having her. I think she’s going to be a bigger presence next season for sure.”

Riverdale‘s season three finale premieres on May 15 on The CW.

'Riverdale' Showrunner Opens Up About When & How Luke Perry Will Written Off The Show

Fred Andrews’s absence from Riverdale will be addressed in season four, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says.

Speaking with Variety, Roberto opened up about just how the show will address Luke Perry‘s passing and what the show will look like moving forward.

“That was a decision we made partly because when Luke passed it was such a shock, and we were so sad — we were so bereft — and we knew we had to address it someway, but we didn’t want to get it wrong,” he says, of holding off on announcing his passing in the show.

After Luke passed away, following complications from a stroke in early March, the Riverdale writing staff had already written most of the season.

“It felt like trying to squeeze this in would have been a disservice,” he continued. The show, however, will “absolutely” explain and “honor Luke and explain what’s going on with Fred and why we haven’t seen him” at the start of the fourth season.

That being said, we also might see Molly Ringwald, aka Mary Andrews, more in season four as well.

“We love Molly; we love having her on the show; I always say to Molly, ‘Come back as often as you want, whenever you want,’” he says. “We started to have conversations about [Molly] having a bigger presence on the show next season.”

Riverdale‘s season finale will air next Wednesday on The CW.

KJ Apa on 'Riverdale' Dad Luke Perry: 'I Wish I Could Be Like That'

KJ Apa is sharing some of his memories with his late Riverdale co-star Luke Perry.

The Hate U Give actor opened up during his appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Friday (April 26).

Luke played KJ‘s father on the CW show.

“It’s not every day you come across a guy like Luke,” KJ said. “Luke is the kind of person who did everything he can to make whoever you are, no matter how big or small you are, feel comfortable and feel welcome. It’s hard to kind of put into words how that makes me feel.”

“He would call my parents every week and keep them updated on how I’m doing,” KJ continued. “He and my dad were always texting each other.”

“I wish I could be like that,” KJ added, to which Jimmy Fallon replied, “You can be like that. You are like that.”

Luke tragically passed away last month at the age of 52 after suffering a stroke.

SPOILER ALERT – DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE LATEST EPISODE OF RIVERDALE OR DON’T WANT TO KNOW!

Luke Perry’s final scene as Fred Andrews on Riverdale has aired and we don’t know about you, but we definitely had tears in our eyes.

In the scene, which Luke shared with on-screen son KJ Apa, sees Fred giving Archie advice about his boxing match against Randy the previous week.

While Randy had been taking drugs to give him an edge, the same drugs that Archie was also offered but declined, Archie was still worried about the outcome, seeing as Randy died.

Archie was ready to blame himself for the death and vowed never to step into a boxing ring again – but Fred wouldn’t let him.

Standing in his kitchen, Fred assured Archie that randy died because of the drugs, and with his final words, he told Archie, “You’re innocent.”

'Riverdale' Showrunner Reveals How The Show Will Address Luke Perry's Death

We know that Riverdale won’t ever be the same without Luke Perry as Fred Andrews.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke with ET about the future of the series and how it will address Fred’s disappearance and death in the coming episodes.

“You know, honestly, we are I think all still in shock and are all still processing and grieving,” he says. “We know that we have to address it in some way, but we’re giving ourselves a little bit of time and space before we figure out the best way to honor him.”

He also shared that there are a few episodes with Luke still in them.

“There are still a few more episodes that have Luke in them, so we’re glad to share those,” Roberto added.

“His spirit — which was so generous and wise and vivacious — we hope will infuse every episode, so in my mind, every episode for the rest of time on Riverdale will have a bit of Luke in it.”
