Maddie Bowman Wins GOLD in Halfpipe Skiing at Sochi Olympics

Maddie Bowman gets a lift from fellow gold medalist David Wise after soaring to the top of the leaderboard for Freestyle Skiing Ladies’ Ski Halfpipe Finals at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics held at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park on Thursday night (February 20) in Sochi, Russia.

The 20-year-old skier was lifted up by David, 23, who also won the gold medal for the Men’s Halfpipe a few days before.

Maddie earned a whopping 89.00 points, ahead of France’s Marie Martinod (85.40), and Japan’s Ayana Onozuka (83.20).

“The way I’ve gotten here is taking it one day and one competition at a time and having absolutely as much fun as I could, and hey, it worked out,” Maddie shared afterwards.

She added about paying tribute to the late Sarah Burke, an athlete from Canada who pushed to have halfpipe in the Olympics: “Sarah has inspired us on snow and off snow, and she would have been very proud of how all of the girls rode tonight. I sure hope that I and everyone else made her proud, because we would have not been here without her.”
