'Mary Poppins Returns' Bathtub Scene Was 100% Real

'Mary Poppins Returns' Bathtub Scene Was 100% Real

By now, we’ve all seen Mary Poppins Returns in theaters – and if you haven’t, what’s the hold up?!

Anyhow, there’s a pretty iconic scene in the film, and in the trailers, where Emily Blunt, as Mary Poppins, leans back into a bathtub and just simply disappears into a fantastical world.

But if you’re still wondering if that was CGI at all, we’re here to tell you it was 100% real.

Emily truly did disappear into a bathtub and onto a…slide that led her under the set.

“They actually carved a hole in the bottom of the bath and had a slide that went under the stage,” Emily recently explained of how the crew pulled off the amazing shot.

“But it was a drop. It was fast and steep. So the kids did theirs 20 times; I think I did it twice.”

One of the stand out songs and performances from the OG Mary Poppins movies was “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” – however, it won’t be featured in the new movie, Mary Poppins Returns.

Speaking with EW, screenwriter David Magee and producer Marc Platt opened up about the decision not to include the song, or even word, in the upcoming film.

“We wanted to create the story with our own language and in our own way with a nod to the past, but to make it fresh and interesting and stand on its own,” Marc shared. “The challenge in creating a new score for this is to, like the rest of the film, put a foot in the original, but very much [let it be] its own thing with its own personality.”

While the word nor song is in the new film, there are “little nuggets that, if you know the movie, provoke both emotional experience and also kind of delight”, he promises.

David added, “We wanted to pay homage to it and make reference to it, but we wanted to make sure that when you started our film, you were watching a new story, a new installment.”

Mary Poppins Returns will hit theaters on December 19th. Check out the new featurette below!
