Missy Franklin shows off her shiny bronze medal alongside teammates Jessica Hardy, Lia Neal and Allison Schmitt after placing in the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay on Day 1 of the London 2012 Olympic Games held at the Aquatics Centre on Saturday (July 28) in London.
The 17-year-old swimming sensation tweeted, “My first Olympic medal and a new American Record. I am so proud of my relay and couldn’t think of a better way to start off the meet! #USA”
Missy is now headed to compete for a gold medal tomorrow night. She won her heat during the Women’s 100m Backstroke preliminaries and won in the semifinals with a finish time of 59.12
“Oh, my gosh. You can’t take any chances here,” Missy told ESPN about medaling in her first individual competition. “You have to get out there and do the best that you can. I know I can do faster than I did in prelims.”

Missy Franklin and Michael Phelps accept their Omega watches for Male and Female Swimmers of the Meet after the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials held at the CenturyLink Center last week in Omaha, Neb.
The 17-year-old swimmer broke records during the trails — qualifying for seven events for the upcoming Olympic games. No American woman had ever qualified for more than six.
“The whole week, I think, went really, really well,” Missy told USA Today.
“It went just as well as (coach) Todd (Schmitz) and I could have ever asked for, so I think we’re both thrilled. I can’t believe I have seven events. That’s so overwhelming but so exciting at the same time,” she added.
