Inspired by journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn‘s book of the same name, the Half the Sky Movement brings together video, websites, games, blogs and other educational tools to not only raise awareness of women’s issues, but to also provide concrete steps to fight these problems and empower women.

Monique Coleman keeps it chic on the blue carpet as she arrives for the mPowering Action Pre-Grammy event held at The Conga Room at L.A. Live on Friday night (February 8) in Los Angeles.
The actress and activist hosted the event, which aimed to “empower youth with information and access to education, job and health resources — delivered directly to them through their mobile phone.”
“So honored to be hosting tonight’s event for #mPoweringAction w/ #UNFoundation at #GrammyWeek. Youth r changing the world! #UN #icpdyouth,” Monique wrote on Twitter.
Through the mPowering Action mobile application, young people will be able to explore and articulate the issues that are important to them, search a global database of nonprofit organizations to get involved with, find local meetings and/or events that focus on issues relevant to them and connect with like-minded peers throughout the world.

The actress and UN Youth Ambassador hosted the event and presented awards to Variety publisher Brian Gott and Michael Sneed of Johnson & Johnson.

The 31-year-old High School Musical alum is teaming up with the beauty line Bellaboo and Ulta stores to host the competition Sing for Self-Esteem.

“This is an amazing opportunity for budding artists and all young people to help spread the very important positive self-esteem message,” Monique shared.
The winner will receive a Talent Development with SeveNtY7 Records, a professional recording of their version of the Bellaboo song and release to iTunes, a music video, a photo shoot, a year’s worth of beauty products, plus a $500 shopping spree!

The focus was on building opportunity for youth: In the USA, Virgin Unite is providing opportunities for youth facing unprecedented unemployment, while The Eve Branson Foundation is empowering young women in Moroccan villages.
