China Anne McClain & Nafessa Williams Dish On The Audience Connection to 'Black Lightning'

China Anne McClain laughs it up with on-screen sister Nafessa Williams during their appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday night (February 5) in New York City.

The Black Lightning stars opened up about what the audience is connecting with the new series.

“It’s very rooted in reality,” China explains. “When it comes to a superhero like Superman, it’s very fantastical. You don’t really feel like you can walk outside and be like ‘it’s a bird, it’s a plane’.”

She adds, “With Black Lightning, you feel like you could see him walking down the street. Like ‘Oh, there’s our neighborhood hero’.”

The two Black Lightning stars took a break from filming their CW show to chat about the impact it’s had so far.

In an earlier interview, China and Nafessa opened up about their sister dynamic on the show.

“I love the fact that Thunder gets her powers first,” China shared in a recent interview with Access Hollywood. “You know, she’s older.”

She continues, “I also love the fact that we focus on that first, because that’s what drives the show…[Thunder] is like Jennifer’s mentor, so her experiencing this first, it will be great to pass along.”

Nafessa Williams Talks Playing a Black Lesbian Superhero on 'Black Lightning'

Nafessa Williams Talks Playing a Black Lesbian Superhero on 'Black Lightning'

Nafessa Williams is opening up about her character on the new CW show Black Lightning.

The 28-year-old actress plays Anissa Pierce/Thunder, a black lesbian superhero, the first on television.

“She’s fully out. She’s been out since she was a teenager. She’s 22 now. She’s walking boldly and unapologetically in who she is,” Nafessa told Teen Vogue. “It’s amazing to watch because I’ve been getting on social media a lot of comments. Not even just black lesbians, just young lesbians everywhere who want to see more of themselves on TV and show what the life of a lesbian is like. You’re gonna go on that journey with Anissa. It’s also cool because my parents on the show, they’re very accepting and open about my sexuality. I hope that parents watching are inspired to support their lesbian or gay child.”

“I wouldn’t say [it adds] pressure. I think more just excited to be a voice for it and be a part of the change,” she continued. “Again, the producers and the writers, they’ve written a really well fill-out, perfectly fill-out character. It’s about just telling the story authentically. I know with Mara [Brock Akil] and Salim [Akil], that I can trust them with that at the helm, that they’re gonna tell this story authentically the way it needs to be told. I think that takes the pressure off of me right there, knowing that we’re good.”

Catch Black Lightning on Tuesdays @ 9PM ET/PT on The CW.

The CW's 'Black Lightning' Isn't In The Arrowverse -- Here's Why

The CW's 'Black Lightning' Isn't In The Arrowverse -- Here's Why

China Anne McClain leans on on-screen dad Cress Williams during their panel at the 2018 Winter TCA Press Tour held at The Langham Huntington Hotel on Sunday (January 7) in Pasadena, Calif.

The two Black Lightning stars were joined by co-stars Christine Adams, Nafessa Williams, James Remar, Damon Gupton, and Marvin Jones III, as well as showrunners Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil.

Speaking with The Wrap about the series, Salim shared that the new DC show wouldn’t be part of the Arrowverse at all.

“I say this with all due respect, but they’re not really relevant to the show that we’re doing,” he says. “The great thing that Warner Bros. and CW allowed us to do was create our own world. We really wanted folk to get to know this family before we started branching out.”

So, if China wants that crossover with The Flash…it’s going to be a little hard to do right now.

Nafessa is also pictured below at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes Party later that night with Jessica Parker Kennedy.
