Normani released a statement, writing that the cancellation “truly disappoints me as I know it disappoints you,” adding that she’d been “working harder than I ever have in rehearsals for the last week to ensure that I give you the best possible performance.”
“Thank you to the BBMAs for being so understanding and patient. We all tried incredibly hard to work through these obstacles to figure out any and every possible way to make this work,” she continued.
“I love you all and Sam very much,” Normani wrote. “I’m praying that he’s able to take the time he needs. I’m with you.”

That same day, the 22-year-old singer hit the stage with Khalid to perform their collaboration “Love Lies” during the annual music and arts festival.

The former Fifth Harmony member told People that even though she has known the “break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored” singer for a “very long time,” they haven’t really had the chance to just “be normal, and really enjoy each other” because of their busy schedules.
“We wear face masks, wake up really late, have breakfast, that kind of jam … just typical girls!” Normani said about their friendship during their months on the road together. “I feel like she’s had an incredible year, especially going through as much as she has. The way that she’s handled things, not only as an artist, but as a woman — I think she’s the definition of resilience.”
“There are so many women around me, I’m really inspired,” she added about the dancers and the band, explaining that “it’s like a sleepover on wheels.”

The 22-year-old former Fifth Harmony songstress served as the musical guest and teamed up with 6LACK for a stellar performance of their collaboration “Waves.”
During the performance, Normani and her crew of dancers got in formation while showing out with their synchronized moves. 6LACK emerged for his brief verse before Normani capped off the sultry set on a high note.
Tonight Show‘s very own Questlove took to Twitter to praise her performance: “After some 2000 summed odd episodes of Late Night/Tonight I’ll say that @Normani’s performance on #FallonTonight was one of the most impressive,” The Roots drummer said.
“Waves” was first premiered live during the Tidal X concert in Brooklyn in October of 2018, followed by a Beats 1 premiere in November. The song has already hit the Top 20 of the U.S. Hot R&B Songs Chart on Billboard, as well as the U.S. R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs Chart.
“Proud to finally share this with you guys. there was SO much love and hard work poured into this video. hope you like it ♥️🌊,” Normani wrote on Twitter.
According to Billboard, “Love Lies” has tied the record for the most weeks spent on Billboard’s Pop Songs radio airplay chart with Dua Lipa‘s “New Rules”.
Normani and Khalid‘s song because their first number one pop song for both of them. Now, in the track’s 45th week on the chart, it went up from No. 14 to No. 12.

The “Love Lies” crooner took to social media on Saturday (February 9) to get fans excited.
“2.12,” she captioned the Instagram video below, tagging collaborator 6lack.
The clip features Normani holding her hands in front of her face before opening them to reveal herself falling sideways off of what appears to be a diving board.
