Lauren Jauregui opens up about why she’s so against the current White House administration.
The 20-year-old Fifth Harmony member explains how Donald Trump‘s words and actions have affected her personally.
“Well, I am a woman. One of [Trump's] first executive orders was to take away our rights to our bodies,” Lauren told MTV. “I am also a bisexual. His vice-president [Mike Pence] believes in conversion therapy. I am also of immigrant descent. My grandparents and my mom came from Cuba back in the ’60s because they were fleeing from communism and Castro. I wouldn’t be here otherwise. I don’t understand what’s going on right now – it just doesn’t make any sense.”
(In case you don’t know, conversion therapy is psychological treatment and/or counseling designed to change a person’s sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual.)
Lauren also said, “Whoever is reading this, make sure that when you agree with everything that’s being said and when you feel passionate about your future, you take it into your hands. You do something.”
The 20-year-old Fifth Harmony member just penned a new letter to the President, this time to oppose the controversial Muslim Ban he signed into order last week.
“Raise your hand if you are an immigrant, or the sons and daughters of immigrant parents, or the grandchildren of immigrants, or the great-grandchildren, or great-great-grandchildren?” Lauren started off the letter (via People). “Waitare everyone’s hands upincluding yours, Mr. Trumpexcept for the Indigenous people of the Americas?! Because they should be.”
She continued, “This country was built and continues to survive off the backs of immigrants and refugees. The term refugee in itself is such a significant word. These people are not terrorists: Many are escaping wars that we created in their lands. To tell another human being that the disastrous tortures of war are not important and to then go even a step further and insult their plight for freedom by labeling them ‘terrorists’ is just disrespectful to humanity. The only terrorism that both history and I have experienced has been at the hands of powerful White men who are willing to systematically kill and conquer without an ounce of empathy for anything but their pockets.”
“We have to realize how important this time is,” Lauren added. “My young people who understand and did not choose this for their future, the older generation who blindly chose to take this comfortable future we all envisioned away: We have never known war, we have never known the pain of discomfort, we have been privileged and promised into our moral oblivion.”
WHAT DO YOU THINK of Lauren’s latest open letter to Donald Trump?
In case you don’t remember, Laurencame out as bisexual late last year in another powerful letter to Trump.
The 16-year-old Black-ish star took to Instagram to write a really powerful message about what she wants the term “American” to become.
“American. My dream of dreams, my goal, my motivation, is that the term ‘American’ will one day truly be inclusive of the many people that live in its 50 states,” Yara wrote. “The creation of safe space is essential to allowing all people to embrace who they are without the fear of discrimination or suppression. Our many identities (whether it be ethnic, gender, religious, sexual, etc) should be celebrated and protected. The suppression of any person is the suppression of all people.”
She continued, “We all deserve clean water, equal pay, the right to love and legally love who we want, to feel protected by the law, and so much more. To live freely is what was promised and what we work to attain. Through our action, solidarity, and perseverance, we will define American. #NoDAPL #VoteForLove #FlintWaterCrisis #VoteforEquality #genderparity”
The 19-year-old YouTuber recently sat down with the Commander-in-Chief to talk about everything from climate change to healthy eating.
“I was talking to him like a friend,” Lia says in a video posted to her YouTube channel. “He’s so cool, he was so kind, so easy to talk to…but then I got down to business and I asked the hard-hitting journalist questions.”
The Pretty Little Liars star opens up about her past battles with anorexia and why that’s a factor in this year’s election for her.
“I’m such a huge supporter of Mrs. Clinton for so many reasons, specifically because she has been such a huge advocate for health care, and her definition of health care includes mental health care,” Troian says in the video, which you can watch below. “And that to me is just – it’s the deciding factor between both candidates.”
She continued, “With anorexia, a lot of it is about presenting a front of everything is OK, as you’re slowly killing yourself. Gone were the days where I was just a happy, carefree kid running around and suddenly I felt this inability to interact with people and to nourish myself.”
“If I had just been shunned to the side as not having ‘real problems,’ I don’t know that I would be living today,” Troian added. “I just want to make sure that everybody has the same opportunity for treatment that I have, and I think that we have to make sure that our government invests in those programs.”
