Marlene King Says the Most Important Message in 'Pretty Little Liars' is About Friendship

Marlene King Says the Most Important Message in 'Pretty Little Liars' is About Friendship

Pretty Little Liars may be over, but the influence of the seven-season teen drama is not dying out anytime soon. The final episode was the most-tweeted about television episode of 2017, and throughout its run, the show taught its viewers a lot about resilience, bravery, and friendship.

In a new essay, showrunner Marlene King opens up about the “true aim” for the show and what it means to her.

“The true aim of Pretty Little Liars was to show its audience that friendship could get you through anything,” she wrote in an essay for Thrive Global, It was important that we show that in as many and diverse ways as possible. Through breakups, huge mistakes, betrayal and mental health issues, these girls stuck together.”

She went on to talk about how it means a lot to her what her audience took out of the show.

“We hope we have given our audience not just seven years of wish fulfillment but also a path to seeing how to promote friendship and kindness through choices and actions.”

She has definitely given us that, and a little bit of our hearts will be in Rosewood forever.

The Pretty Little Liars stars all took a little something from the set to remember their amazing experience on the show.

Shay Mitchell actually took all of Emily Fields’ tracksuits, plus her swimsuit and cap.

“I didn’t think I needed her running shoes because our styles are completely different,” Shay jokes in a new interview. “If I could wear heels every day, I would. But that’s Shay. Playing Emily was super fun for me because I literally got to be in her shoes.”

She actually had something else to remember the series by, too, and we’re not talking about her finger tattoo — her original audition papers!

“They’re ripped and highlighted,” she shared.

Right. In. The. Heart.

It looks fabulous — and from the moment we saw it, it was like Kaia turned into PLL‘s Spencer Hastings! (Or, you know, Alex Drake. Whichever twin you prefer).

Spencer was owning this cute modern shag during the final season of the hit Freeform show, and we are loving it on Kaia.

Sasha Pieterse Was 'Hit By a Wave of Absolute Joy' When Watching the 'PLL' Finale

Pretty Little Liars actress Sasha Pieterse penned a gorgeous note honoring the end of the seven-season series earlier this week, and after the finale she took to Instagram again to work through all of her emotions.

“Yesterday marked the end of a major chapter in my life,” she wrote, accompanying the image of all five liars making a “shhh” sign from the finale, “As I’m sure a few of you know, the TV show Pretty Little Liars had it’s very last finale last night.”

Changing course after so many years left her feeling a bit uneasy.

“I woke up feeling sick with a huge knot in my stomach! It’s so surreal that there will be no more live ‘previously on Pretty Little Liars‘ and no more ‘Shhh’s’ at the end of that now very iconic song,” she said, “But as I joined my PLL family to watch the finale, I was hit by this wave of absolute joy.”

“It dawned on me that this is an end to an era,” she continued, “A very important era, but even more importantly it was a time to celebrate. To embrace the incredibly wonderful time we all shared together and to soak in every bit of joy it had brought me and others. PLL… playing Alison has been such a crucial part of my childhood and now adulthood. From starting and graduating high school, getting my drivers license, buying my first home, getting engaged to my best friend, and now wedding planning, what a trip! I just want to thank you. I wish I could give all of you a huge hug!”

She closes out her post with a tribute to both her fans and her future.

“You have seen me grow and you have grown with me. Thank you for always sticking by me, for never giving up on me or Alison. As I enter this new chapter of my life, I hope you will continue with me. There’s so many new fun adventures I’m about to journey through and I would be so honored if you all ride along with me. My blog @sashaingoodtaste is definitely one of those adventures. Sasha in Good Taste doesn’t just stop at this blog, there’s so many more things in store (very soon) that I can’t wait to show you! Creating and entertaining is such a passion of mine and having you share that alongside me, means the absolute world to me! We. are. family. and Rosewood will forever live on! I wholeheartedly ADORE YOU! Love, Sasha… -A #prettylittleliars #pllfamily #emisonfamily #emison #emisonisendgame #sashaingoodtaste.”

We can’t wait to see what she does next!

The appropriate last line of her post will also serve as the last line of this one: “That’s immortality my darlings.”

The 'Pretty Little Liars' Series Finale Could've Been So Much Different, Troian Bellisario Says

The 'Pretty Little Liars' Series Finale Could've Been So Much Different, Troian Bellisario Says

Pretty Little Liars could’ve ended an entirely different way than what we saw on Tuesday night.

Star Troian Bellisario, who played evil twin Alex Drake aka A.D., opened up about the original ending the writers had in mind.

“Originally — I don’t know if I’m supposed to say this — but I think originally the ending was supposed to be a little bit different where Alex had kind of gotten away with it a little bit more,” she says. “And the only person that was onto her was Toby.”

But that definitely didn’t happen.

Troian adds, “I think that ultimately would’ve left things too much up in the air and we would’ve been worried for Spencer.”

“It was really fun because this way, Spencer got a happy ending, and all the girls got a happy ending, and Alex got to be with her family – which is great, but also in a little bit of a tricky situation.”

Just imagine if the original ending was what happened — we’d have an entirely different set up for a potential spinoff!

Troian Bellisario Dishes On Mastering an Essex Accent For Alex Drake

Troian Bellisario Dishes On Mastering an Essex Accent For Alex Drake

Troian Bellisario pulled the ultimate switcheroo on Pretty Little Liars — with absolutely no one knowing that her evil twin, Alex Drake, was A.D. until the end.

The actress opened up about learning about Alex, constructing her character, and even mastering that Essex accent.

“I really wanted to make her an Essex girl,” Troian revealed. “Because she was going to have so many scenes with Wren, I wanted to make sure she sounded very different from him. If I just did a generic posh accent, it would be a little harder to hold onto.”

“But if I was very specific, and I made her sound very different from [the other British characters], it’d be easier to tell that this is a living, breathing person from a specific place with a specific history.”

Troian adds that it was actually easy once she got the hang of the accent: “It was a little easier to take the turn because it was so sharp. Like, she wasn’t slightly British, she was fully over there.”

“It was important for me to work with a dialect coach to get a specific accent; she’s telling a whole story with the way that she speaks.”

Mona Vanderwaal Had The Perfect Ending on 'Pretty Little Liars' Series Finale, Janel Parrish Says

Mona Vanderwaal has been through it all on Pretty Little Liars — so the fact that she got a sweet little ending was perfect.

Janel Parrish spoke to EW after the finale about Mona’s happily ever after — moving to Paris and winning the game.

“I thought it was a perfect ending for everybody, but especially for Mona,” Janel says. “…She moved to Paris, which she’s always been obsessed with, she has her love and her dolls, and literally her dolls in her dollhouse underneath her shop.”

She also spoke on Mona’s journey through the final season and finally being able to say that Mona is one of the Liars.

“We saw her struggle a little bit with the dark side when she was playing the game,” Janel shared. “She definitely had a mental breakdown and a lot of that was due to her guilt from killing Charlotte and not ever telling anybody that secret. The game plays with you in so many ways and I think that’s how it played with Mona was it got her to that breaking point of her guilt.”

She adds, “I do think that she left her evil ways and switched over to a Liar, in my opinion, after the dollhouse, having that traumatic experience with all of them.”
