Troian Bellisario Dishes On Mastering an Essex Accent For Alex Drake

Troian Bellisario Dishes On Mastering an Essex Accent For Alex Drake

Troian Bellisario pulled the ultimate switcheroo on Pretty Little Liars — with absolutely no one knowing that her evil twin, Alex Drake, was A.D. until the end.

The actress opened up about learning about Alex, constructing her character, and even mastering that Essex accent.

“I really wanted to make her an Essex girl,” Troian revealed. “Because she was going to have so many scenes with Wren, I wanted to make sure she sounded very different from him. If I just did a generic posh accent, it would be a little harder to hold onto.”

“But if I was very specific, and I made her sound very different from [the other British characters], it’d be easier to tell that this is a living, breathing person from a specific place with a specific history.”

Troian adds that it was actually easy once she got the hang of the accent: “It was a little easier to take the turn because it was so sharp. Like, she wasn’t slightly British, she was fully over there.”

“It was important for me to work with a dialect coach to get a specific accent; she’s telling a whole story with the way that she speaks.”

Mona Vanderwaal Had The Perfect Ending on 'Pretty Little Liars' Series Finale, Janel Parrish Says

Mona Vanderwaal Had The Perfect Ending on 'Pretty Little Liars' Series Finale, Janel Parrish Says

Mona Vanderwaal has been through it all on Pretty Little Liars — so the fact that she got a sweet little ending was perfect.

Janel Parrish spoke to EW after the finale about Mona’s happily ever after — moving to Paris and winning the game.

“I thought it was a perfect ending for everybody, but especially for Mona,” Janel says. “…She moved to Paris, which she’s always been obsessed with, she has her love and her dolls, and literally her dolls in her dollhouse underneath her shop.”

She also spoke on Mona’s journey through the final season and finally being able to say that Mona is one of the Liars.

“We saw her struggle a little bit with the dark side when she was playing the game,” Janel shared. “She definitely had a mental breakdown and a lot of that was due to her guilt from killing Charlotte and not ever telling anybody that secret. The game plays with you in so many ways and I think that’s how it played with Mona was it got her to that breaking point of her guilt.”

She adds, “I do think that she left her evil ways and switched over to a Liar, in my opinion, after the dollhouse, having that traumatic experience with all of them.”

I. Marlene King Says 'The Perfectionists' Might Actually Be a Spinoff of 'Pretty Little Liars'

Earlier this year, the internet was losing its’ mind over the possibility of another Pretty Little Liars spinoff happening.

Showrunner I. Marlene King is working on a new series for Freeform called The Perfectionists, which just happens to be based off the books by Sara Shepard, the same author who wrote the PLL books.

While it was all speculation then about this show actually being a spin-off, Marlene is giving us a little more information on the project.

When asked about the show and its’ ties to PLL, Marlene had this to say:

“You know there might be some truth to that, but my hands are tied and I’m not allowed to talk about it just yet. So hopefully we will get to share some news soon!”

Nope! We need answers NOW!

Here's How Ashley Benson Reacted To 'A.D.'s Reveal on 'Pretty Little Liars'

Ashley Benson heads out for a workout just before the PLL series finale in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon (June 27).

Just after the series finale, co-star Troian Bellisario (who was outed as Uber A/Alex Drake in the final episode) opened up about how Ashley reacted to the reveal.

“There was a scene in the very beginning of the season where [Ashley Benson's character] Hanna wakes up to a dream of younger Spencer talking to her in the cell A.D. put her in.

When we came out to the cast about Alex, Ashley said, ‘Wait, you were a different person in that scene and you didn’t even tell me?’” Troian shared.

She adds, “I said, ‘I wasn’t allowed to tell you!’ She was like, ‘Man, I’m feeling really betrayed right now!’ [Laughs].”

If you missed it, you can read up on Ashley‘s post-PLL plans.

FYI: Ashley wore APL running shoes.

Pretty Little Liars Revealed 'A.D.' To Everyone In The Poster!

Pretty Little Liars Revealed 'A.D.' To Everyone In The Poster!

While all of us were trying to figure out just who A.D. was in the final 10 episodes of Pretty Little Liars, we didn’t look at the most obvious place — THE POSTER!

Earlier this year, Freeform unveiled a brand new poster for the final episodes, which featured all our Liars peaking out behind black triangles which all looked like hoods.

However, one stood out the most — and that would be Spencer Hastings, or, as we now know her, Alex Drake (both played by Troian Bellisario).

She was the only one who had both eyes peaking out instead of just one, like all the others.

The answer was right in front of our faces!!!

SPOILERS AHEAD! DO NOT READ IF YOU DIDN’T WATCH THE SERIES FINALE OF ‘PRETTY LITTLE LIARS’

Did anyone else let out a gigantic gasp when Uber A.D. was revealed on the series finale of Pretty Little Liars last night?! We know we did!

While we had heard the fan theories about “Twincer”, we left our minds open to whoever it might be — but that theory was right! Spencer Hastings’ British twin sis, Alex Drake, was indeed A.D. — and Troian Bellisario has to be just about the best secret keeper ever!

“I was first told in the beginning of season five,” Troian revealed in an interview with Elle. “Marlene took me aside and told me, ‘I have an idea, but I don’t know if the network will let me do it…’ Then she sat me down and explained this whole ending to me.”

That’s TWO WHOLE YEARS!

Troian adds, “It took two hours to go through the entire pitch. There was so much for her to tell! I didn’t even know about Mary Drake — we hadn’t really introduced that character’s story yet. So I didn’t know about Spencer being adopted either. She had a lot to tell me.”

In fact, this whole storyline didn’t even come until after season four — because the show kept getting renewed.

“Originally, the show was only supposed to last five years,” she shared (that’s news to us!). “So she was going to take it through to Charlotte being revealed as A, and that was it.”

Troian adds, “But around season four, the network contacted her and said they really wanted to take the show through to seven seasons. That’s when she had to start creating this whole other world, with a new ultimate villain.”
