Jordan Fisher is Proud To Be The First POC To Play Rent's Mark Cohen

Jordan Fisher is Proud To Be The First POC To Play Rent's Mark Cohen

When Jordan Fisher makes his debut as Mark Cohen in tonight’s Rent: Live, he’ll be the first person of color to do so.

The 24-year-old actor opened up about how proud he is to be the first.

“I know people of color who are Jewish. I know people of color who were born into privilege,” Jordan shared with USA Today. “Beyond that, just the melanin in my skin, I loved the idea of playing somebody I felt very close to.”

He adds, “I was kind of always the kid that was supposed to be somewhere else. And that is Mark, the outsider looking in but living in the nucleus of all of us.”

Jordan also opened up to THR about becoming the narrator for the important story: “The essence of Mark for me is, as the narrator of the story, to allow America [and] anybody that’s watching the show to go on this journey with him through his eyes, through the lens of his camera, and to see what he really deals with.”

Mark, in Rent: Live, is “a little more tortured” than his previous incarnations.

“My Mark is a bit more of a caretaker than we’ve seen in the past, somebody that is really the glue that just tries his best to hold everybody together,” Jordan says, which stems from “his innate yearning for a community and sense of family.”

Rent: Live premieres TONIGHT @ 8PM ET/PT on Fox.

'Rent: Live' To Weave Injured Star Brennin Hunt's Rehearsal Footage Into Broadcast

'Rent: Live' To Weave Injured Star Brennin Hunt's Rehearsal Footage Into Broadcast

Earlier today, it was revealed that Brennin Hunt, who plays Roger in the upcoming Rent: Live production on Fox, had injured his ankle during dress rehearsals.

Now, the network has announced that the show will go on.

“Last night during a live performance of Fox’s production of Rent, one of the actors, Brennin Hunt, was injured. But in the spirit of Rent, everyone — producers and cast, original and current — is dedicated to ensuring that tonight’s broadcast must, and will, go on,” Fox said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

The injury, which appeared to be serious, occurred ahead of the final act in what is expected to be a three-hour performance. Hunt was taken to a local hospital following the dress rehearsal.

Now, the network is expected to weave portions of Brennin‘s taped performance from Saturday’s rehearsal into the main live show to lessen the stress on the actor.

He was having trouble putting weight on the ankle at the end of the rehearsal.

Rent: Live airs TONIGHT, starting @ 8PM ET/PT on Fox.

Vanessa Hudgens Admits She Didn't Know Much About 'Rent' Before Playing Mimi At The Hollywood Bowl

Vanessa Hudgens Admits She Didn't Know Much About 'Rent' Before Playing Mimi At The Hollywood Bowl

Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Maureen in tonight’s production of Rent: Live, actually didn’t know much about the musical before first starring in it a few years ago.

The 30-year-old actress revealed to Playbill that she was first introduced to it by Neil Patrick Harris, who cast her as Mimi in the Hollywood Bowl’s production.

“He had me come in and read for Mimi, and I ended up going along for the journey,” she says. “My introduction to the show really was from doing it, and it was such a blast.”

Now, as Maureen, Vanessa‘s co-star Jordan Fisher revealed that her performance of “Over the Moon” might just be the most tweeted about number.

“It’s very abstract. But I think the way that me and Michael (Greif) have been exploring it makes a lot of sense to me, and hopefully will make a lot more sense to everybody watching,” she shared about the number to USA Today. “Everything kind of comes to a pause and it’s just me on that stage, and it has to be worth it.”

Vanessa added, “It’s a lot of pressure, and I remember the first few times doing it I was terrified, and sweating uncontrollably.”

“You’ve never seen a Maureen like this,” Jordan teased. “She is tackling this and giving is a different kind of life in a way that I’ve never seen.”

Vanessa opened up about her performance with USA Today, saying that “it’s very abstract. But I think the way that me and Michael (Greif) have been exploring it makes a lot of sense to me, and hopefully will make a lot more sense to everybody watching.”

She adds, “Everything kind of comes to a pause and it’s just me on that stage, and it has to be worth it. It’s a lot of pressure, and I remember the first few times doing it I was terrified, and sweating uncontrollably.”

Vanessa also spoke to THR about the duo’s friendship going into a second live production together.

“I feel like we both have such a love for musical theater and a love for Rent even before we came to it, [and] it really just translates,” she shared. “Also the fact that we have a relationship already and Maureen and Mark have had a relationship in the past — it all goes hand in hand. It all works perfectly.”
