Joey King Talks Why 'The Kissing Booth' Became A Big Hit on Netflix

Joey King Talks Why 'The Kissing Booth' Became A Big Hit on Netflix

You’ve watching The Kissing Booth on Netflix, right? Of course you have!

Since the premiere in May, the film has skyrocketed and it became one of the go-to films on the streaming service for people to watch.

While Netflix doesn’t release ratings for their original programs, it does report that of the viewers who have watched, one in three have seen it more than once, which is 30 percent higher than the normal rate.

Star Joey King and writer/director Vince Marcello recently chatted NY Times about the movie and just why people are flocking to it.

“You can run commercials, you can do all the conventional stuff, but none of it is as powerful as people on their Twitter feeds saying, ‘Oh my God, check this out, it gave me all the feels’,” Vince shared.

Joey continues that the online fandom has become addicted: “Young people on Instagram made these fan accounts and started hanging out with each other because they love and relate to it so much.”

She also acknowledges that while critics hated the movie, it wasn’t something she was seeking out. She just wanted to see how fans felt about it.

“The problem with critics, not to bash on them, is that when they’re watching a movie, they’re looking for very specific things,” Joey says. “They are forgetting what it’s like to watch a movie and not have to think about how happy you feel. ‘The Kissing Booth’ just makes you feel good.”

And, it also helps that she’s dating Jacob Elordi, aka Noah, in real life, too.

“It’s exciting for people to know what they saw on screen was real.”

Much like his co-star Joey King, Joel Courtney is giving back in a pretty cool way.

The 22-year-old actor is selling The Kissing Booth inspired t-shirts via Represent to raise money for The Lollipops Kids Foundation. On top of that, they feature the ACTUAL kissing booth on them with the catchphrase “Rules are meant to be broken”.

“For all you procrastinators out there (I know cuz I’ll be one tomorrow) there is a countdown on this once in a lifetime opportunity and you only have a couple days left to get these shirts!” Joel reminded his fans on Instagram.

The design, created by Joel, is available for only a few more days. 50% of proceeds going to the Lollipop Kids Foundation, helping children with disabilities.

He added, “@lollipoptheater is an amazing nonprofit that literally lives off of donations. And I’m so thankful and stoked to be teamed up with @represent to help them out as much as possible. Go check out the gear in the link in my BIO!!!”

'Kissing Booth' Author Beth Reekles Shares Her First Impression of the Cast!

Beth Reekles, who wrote the YA novel “The Kissing Booth” (when she was just 15!) is opening up about what she first thought of the cast of the Netflix movie!

“When I met the cast, I knew they’d done a perfect job,” Beth told Teen Vogue about the stars, including Jacob Elordi, Joey King, and Joel Courtney. “They didn’t look exactly how I imagined, but that didn’t matter because they portrayed the characters so perfectly.”

“I couldn’t get over the fact that I would be talking to Jacob one minute, and then the next second, he was Noah,” she added. “His smirk was exactly the way I imagined Noah’s smirk to be.”

We’re still crossing our fingers for a sequel!

Joey King & Jacob Elordi Hit Their Heads A Couple Times During Their First Kiss

Joey King & Jacob Elordi Hit Their Heads A Couple Times During Their First Kiss

There’s a very big, noticeable height difference between on-and-off screen couple Joey King and Jacob Elordi, and yes, they noticed it themselves.

The 18-year-old actress spoke to Seventeen in a new interview about how, while rehearsing one of their kiss scenes for The Kissing Booth, they definitely hit their heads.

“I remember the first time I had to kiss Jacob. That was crazy. I was so nervous,” Joey admits before going on with her story. “So, Jacob and I were in our director’s office rehearsing the scene. He like, ‘Ok, we’re going to rehearse today, blah, blah, blah, and we’re going to rehearse this scene.’ I flip to the page and it’s our gazebo kiss, the super passionate, intense one.”

She recalls, “I was like, ‘Omg! I just met this guy. I have to make out with this person in an office.’ He was nervous. I was nervous.”

But it’s all good, because they worked it out, even if there were a few bumps along the way.

“It all worked out, but it was hilarious because I was in a small square office, trying to figure out how to run up to him and grab his face and kiss him,” Joey says. “And you know, he’s pretty tall. Figuring that out the first time was a bit challenging. I think we hit heads a couple of times.”

The Kissing Booth is streaming now on Netflix.

Joey King Wants A 'Kissing Booth' Sequel As Much As You Do

Joey King Wants A 'Kissing Booth' Sequel As Much As You Do

Joey King wouldn’t say no at all if Netflix decided to greenlight a sequel to The Kissing Booth.

In the flick, she plays Elle, who unexpectedly finds herself locking lips with her secret crush– the ultimate bad boy, Noah Flynn (Jacob Elordi) – aka, her best friend’s brother!

Speaking with Seventeen, Joey opened up about the possibility of a sequel and if Elle and Noah would still be together.

Her answer: yes!

“I think everyone, including myself, wants to see Elle and Noah stay together,” she shared. “I feel like Elle and Noah should stay together and get into the theme park business together and be a power couple who builds theme parks.”

As for the likelihood of a sequel actually happening, Joey is on board.

“Something could happen. Something might. I don’t know. If there was a sequel, I have no idea,” she tried to be nonchalant about it. “I’m like the last to know anything. I promise you, but if there was a sequel, my prediction would be hopefully Elle and Noah stay together.”

Joey also has some ideas for it too: “Elle goes to visit Noah at college. Of course, there has to be some crazy things that get out of hand, but I don’t know. I really hope that a lot of the original characters, if there was a sequel, like the OMG Girls and Tuppen and all those amazing characters would definitely be in it.”

If you missed it, Joey, Jacob and Joel Courtney reunited with the director and producers last week for dinner.
