Sofia Carson Didn't Originally Audition For 'The Perfectionists' Ava At All

Sofia Carson is the first actor cast in the upcoming Pretty Little Liars spinoff series, The Perfectionists.

However, the 24-year-old actress revealed that she actually didn’t audition for Ava, the character she’s playing. It was another character instead!

“I was obsessed with Pretty Little Liars. It’s all I watched,” she told W Magazine. “My agent asked if I’d be interested in going in for the spinoff and I was like, ‘Are you kidding me? Yes please exclamation point, exclamation point.’”

Sofia adds, I went in first for another role to meet with Marlene [King, the creator of the series] and the writers, and then I got the call back to go in for Ava. I went in and tested, and Marlene called me the next day and said, ‘Congratulations, you are my new pretty little liar.’”

“The reaction from everyone has been really, really special,” she continued. “I am really excited. It is such a beautiful legacy that they’ve created, so to be a part of it and continue it, I feel really honored.”

We can’t wait to hear who else will be joining the show!

This week kicked off with the big announcement that Sofia Carson was the first new actress to be cast in The Perfectionists!

Now, the actress is opening up about her audition process and how it feels to be part of the Pretty Little Liars fam.

“I told [Marlene King] that I was just the biggest — the biggest — fan of Pretty Little Liars,” she recalls of her audition. “I was obsessed with it — as so many of us were. It was such a phenomenon, so to be part of that legacy is truly an honor.”

She adds, “When I found out [that I got the role], Marlene called me last Monday and she was like, ‘Guess what? You’re my new Pretty Little Liar,’ and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! That is the coolest thing! I will never ever get used to hearing that — ever.’”

As for what Sofia can tell us about Ava, it’s very, very vague.

“We have secrets that we have to keep here,” she teased. “I can say that not everything is as it seems with her. That’s all I can say.”

The Perfectionists will air on Freeform.

Just don’t ask her why her parents recently fled the country – it’s her one big secret.”

The Descendants 2 starlet will star as Ava in the upcoming Pretty Little Liars spinoff, opposite Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse.

Ava is a beautiful trendsetting blogger and coder, who strives to be a fashion icon.

The Perfectionists is set in Beacon Heights, a town which seems perfect, from their top-tier college to their overachieving residents, but nothing in Beacon Heights is as it appears to be.

The stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town’s first murder. Behind every Perfectionist is a secret, a lie and a needed alibi.

'The Perfectionists' Will Take Place in the Pacific Northwest

'The Perfectionists' Will Take Place in the Pacific Northwest

More details are coming out about the Pretty Little Liars spinoff, The Perfectionists, and we’re getting really excited about it.

Showrunner I. Marlene King revealed to TVLine that the show will take place in the Pacific Northwest area, which is the same in the books.

“We wanted to be true to that, to Sara‘s [Shepard, author] book,” she shared. “Plus, I really liked the way Rosewood became a character on Pretty Little Liars, [so I wanted to] have a new character, a new town.”

“Portland and the Pacific Northwest are so moody and creepy to begin with. That’s going to be a lot of fun to explore.”

Marlene also opened up about what would be different about the show versus PLL.

“Tonally, it’s very similar,” Marlene says. “There is a big mystery, and there is a murder, and there are some characters who are a fractured group at the beginning of our story, and through a murder they become friends.”

However, “it’s a whole new mystery, a whole new murder. We also have Alison and Mona coming from PLL to Beacon Heights, and that’ll all make sense when you see the pilot.”

I. Marlene King Teases That PLL Spinoff 'The Perfectionists' Will Also Have Important Male Characters

We’re all anxious for more details about The Perfectionists — and showrunner I. Marlene King is delivering!

Speaking with ET recently, she dished about locations, just which other Pretty Little Liars characters might pop up and bringing in important male characters into the show.

“I felt like just as we were getting sort of into season five and six of Pretty Little Liars, our guys became such an important part of the show,” she says. “I wanted to explore the relationship between guys and girls who can be friends and not necessarily boyfriend-girlfriend.”

Marlene says that they’re looking to shoot the pilot in Portland and are “in the process of rewriting [the pilot] just to fine-tune it perfectly… we’re super excited about it.”

As for any other PLL characters to pop up, she didn’t rule anything out — even when it came to Emily (Shay Mitchell).

“Well, we’ll just have to wait and see,” she teased.

Lucy Hale Won't Be in 'The Perfectionists', But She'll Stalk The Set

As soon as the Pretty Little Liars spinoff, The Perfectionists, was announced with the cast, all of us were wondering just which other Liars would be guest starring.

Shay Mitchell‘s Emily could or could not be appearing; we’re still not sure on Ashley Benson or Troian Bellisario, either. But for Lucy Hale, it’s a no.

Speaking with TV Guide at the TCA Press Tour over the weekend, Lucy confirmed she won’t be part of it.

“I don’t think I will be in the spin-off,” she shared. “I will definitely be supporting and watching. I think they’re actually going to film in Vancouver, so I might go like stalk the set a little bit.”

Lucy adds that it’s Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse‘s time to shine with the show.

“I’m thrilled for them. I think that they didn’t always necessarily get their moments on the show, and I love both of their characters so much, so I’m very excited and happy that they’re going to get to shine and do their thing.”

The Perfectionists still has yet to start filming or get a premiere date.
