Yara Shahidi is spilling some of the deets about her upcoming series grown-ish!

The show follows the 17-year-old actress’ black-ish character Zoey as she embarks on her freshman year at the fictional Southern California University.

“It’s strange and fantastic. Within five days of shooting, I had gone to three college parties, had ditched my friend, all sorts of stuff!” Yara told EW.

The show’s premiere is set to pay homage to The Breakfast Club and showcases Zoey’s new friend group in a peculiar late-night marketing class.

“We have such an interesting group of characters that don’t seem to feel like they would ever know each other if it wasn’t for this class. It kind of goes back to the coming-of-age tale of how much of our experience is shared,” Yara explained.

We can’t wait to see this! gown-ish premieres on January 3rd at 8 PM on Freeform.

Yara Shahidi Opens Up About the Reason She's Not Dating Right Now

Yara Shahidi Opens Up About the Reason She's Not Dating Right Now

Yara Shahidi looks fresh and fabulous on the cover of Seventeen‘s November/December 2017 issue, out on newsstands on Tuesday (October 31).

Here’s what the 17-year-old Black-ish actress, model and activist had to say:

On her self-image: “I feel like my curls have always been a part of who I am. They are a very real representation of the mix of my two cultures. When you’re a part of a minority of any kind, you’re told not to take up much space, but my hair does that, so there’s nothing I can do except take up the space with it. It gives me confidence…I love the fact that my hair can be intimidating at times.”

On activism: “I love history, and activism is so engraved in history. So much had to have happened for me—and everybody—to come into this world. The women’s movement, the immigration movement…whatever it may be. As you learn about these, it’s hard not to be inspired. Our generation is a representation of all the great movements that have come before us. It’s all about paying it forward… What I’m seeing is basically a movement to be your true self. There are no criteria as to what it takes to be involved, protected and cared for.”

On her love life: “I haven’t dated anybody. My general outlook is if I don’t have time to take a bath on a regular basis, then I don’t have time for another human. I love being busy, and I enjoy where I am at right now.”

Yara Shahidi Reveals Mantras She Lives By in 'Girl's Life's New Issue

Yara Shahidi covers the October/November 2017 issue of Girl’s Life magazine.

The black-ish star chats with the glossy about everything from haters to politics, to her go-to mantras of the moment.

The one we love and will be adopting asap — to stop saying sorry!

“I’ll say it even in situations where I have nothing to apologize for,” she explains, saying that we really shouldn’t be sorry for a habit that can belittle our confidence.

Yara adds, “I’m actively trying to stop, because while of course I want to account for the actions I have control over, it’s important to not feel a constant burden or blame for things that you don’t.”
