John and Ron also told us about the first time they heard Benjamin King read their words in the pilot script and how it was a big moment for them.

“I remember the first time that Ben King auditioned for us, and he was actually one of the first grownups we saw, after auditioning a ton of young kids,” they said.

“He was one of the first adults to read the lines we’d written and we had this moment where it was like ‘Oh, this actually sounds like a TV show’. It came to life for the first time and it felt like his voice, it wasn’t an actor performing. That was a big moment for us.”

John also told us about how things were handled when Ben‘s character, papa Pete Rooney, left the series.

“We absolutely love Ben King. We thought this was a interesting thing to play where there are so many families who do have to make difficult decisions like this — whether its one having to leave to find work in this crazy economy, or whether it’s a divorce situation…this was an interesting thing to explore with the family.”
