Demi Lovato Used To Have Only Male Friends, But She Made A Change

Demi Lovato found common ground with her character Smurfette in Smurfs: The Lost Village for a rather unexpected reason: both of them were always surrounded by men.

“In my work environment, I used to only surround myself with men,” Demi told Mamamia in an interview. “I only had guys in my band, and I toured with guys and my tour manager was a guy and this and that.”

She then began to examine herself to try to figure out why she was only seeking out relationships with men, and closing off women entirely.

“I reevaluated why I didn’t get along with girls, and… I didn’t really have any in my life that I trusted,” she revealed.

Thankfully, Demi recognized the harm her actions might be causing her, and started to open her heart up to friendships with women — to great effect.

“I’ve made it a point to surround myself with strong women and it’s really made a difference in my life,” she continued, and because of this she has befriended many incredible women who she sees as role models in her life.

Perhaps this connection to Smurfette gave her greater insight into how to play the character.

“I really relate to Smurfette, because I was the only female for a little bit,” she said. “I had to make changes in my life to surround myself with influences and people that I could relate to. I’m really grateful that I did.”

Female friendships are powerful, and we’re so glad she’s opened her heart to influences who have changed her life.
