Camila Cabello Says Leaving Fifth Harmony Wasn't the 'Safe Option'

Camila Cabello is getting candid about her decision to quit Fifth Harmony.

The 20-year-old “I Have Questions” singer explains her reasoning and how a lot of it had to do with writing her own songs.

“I think that happened to me as I was discovering my voice as an artist,” Camila told Beats 1′s Zane Lowe. “Especially as a songwriter, I just felt like I needed to express that and it was just time to, you know, sing my story and sing words that were coming from my heart as opposed to words that people were writing for us.”

“Obviously, me leaving the group at that point in time when we were really the most successful, is not the safe option, you know what I mean?” Camila said. “The safe thing would’ve been to just stay and keep singing the songs and keep doing the choreography. And who know’s if this is going to be successful for me? Nobody really knows. But I just know that I’m proud of it and I’m so happy to be making music that’s authentic to me and that I’m gonna look back on and be super proud of.”

“I feel like I was always outspoken about loving songwriting, even while I was in the group,” she added. “But I definitely felt like Fifth Harmony, we were all vehicles for the group’s identity. It wasn’t necessarily like a form of self expression. And I feel like being around the people that were crafting these songs for us, I just was really curious about the whole process. And I felt like that, along the way, became my way of just understanding how I felt about situations like my first kiss when I was 16, my first heartbreak when I was 17.”
