Selena Gomez Wrote 'The Heart Wants What it Wants' Because She Wasn't Happy

Selena Gomez was going through a really tough time when she recorded “The Heart Wants What it Wants” – and in a new radio interview, the singer opens up about why she chose to make music that reflected her emotions.

“There’s moments in life that break you down and it translates in your music,” the 24-year-old “Bad Liar” singer told Zach Sang. “For ‘The Heart Wants What it Wants’ there’s no way I [could] make music…that is happy,” she said of her mindset at the time.

She wasn’t happy so she could not make music that felt inauthentic to her fans and to herself.

“I was going through one of the hardest parts of my life,” she added, “and I took what I was going through and put it into my art.”

Back in 2015, Selena talked about struggling to trust anyone, while in this new interview she talks about how her ability to love people is one of her strongest traits as a person.

We’re so proud of her and of how far she has come!
