Lily Collins Says Revisiting Her Real-Life Eating Disorder in 'To The Bone' Was 'Therapeutic'

Lily Collins is explaining how her past experience with an eating disorder helped her give depth to her character in her upcoming Netflix movie To The Bone.

The actress sported a lacy blue ensemble as she arrived at NBC Studios to promote the film on the Today show on Monday (June 26) in New York City.

“I suffered from an eating disorder as a teenager for quite a few years,” Lily shared. “This project came along my desk at the time when I was in the middle of writing my book ["Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me."], talking about my experience with eating disorders. It was kinda like the universe saying this is something you need to talk about for yourself but also to bring to the attention of people in general.”

“My experiences with this were a beautiful gift to be able to give to my character [Ellen],” Lily continued, adding, “There is always going a part of you that goes, ‘Oh, well stepping back into the shoes of something that wasn’t positive for you may be painful,’ but I think that that was so therapeutic for me as Lily but also to give to Ellen as the character.”
