'Andi Mack' Will Have First Gay Character on Disney Channel Show
Andi Mack is introducing Disney Channel’s first gay character when season two returns on Friday.
Cyrus, played by Joshua Rush, will come out as gay in the new season.
In the season premiere, Andi (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) will awkwardly be sorting out her feelings for her classmate Jonah (Asher Angel) — at the same time, Cyrus does.
He confides in Buffy (Sofia Wylie) about them and struggles with how to share this revelation with his new girlfriend. This will kick off his journey to self-discovery and ultimately self-acceptance as a gay individual, as seen in subsequent episodes.
“Andi Mack is a story about tweens figuring out who they are; Terri Minsky, the cast and everyone involved in the show takes great care in ensuring that it’s appropriate for all audiences and sends a powerful message about inclusion and respect for humanity,” a Disney Channel spokesperson said.
Andi Mack returns on Friday, October 27th @ 8PM ET/PT on Disney Channel.
