Shannon Purser Dishes on The Importance of Body Positivity in 'Sierra Burgess is a Loser'

Shannon Purser‘s brand new movie, Sierra Burgess is a Loser, is streaming now on Netflix!

In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, the 21-year-old actress opened up about how the film treats body image and positivity.

“That’s so important to me, because it would have been so easy to like, straighten her hair and put her in sexy clothes and do her makeup,” Shannon shares. “The producers and everyone involved with the movie were very adamant that there would be no makeover scene. There would be no montage of her learning how to act cool.”

“It’s just not accurate and it’s not fair.”

She continued, “I think we need more stories of fat women living fully, happy lives as themselves without feeling the pressure to change. And I mean, there’s always the pressure to change, for sure. But even if they feel that way, to not give in, to not conform. [We need] stories of bigger women realizing their own beauty.”

“I think it’s a shame that we have so many stories in which fat people don’t really have agency and the ability to live full happy lives while they’re fat. And that’s what I want to change.”
