Author Lauren Oliver Opens Up About New Book 'Broken Things': 'It Was Actually Really Difficult To Write'

Lauren Oliver has a brand new book coming out and JJJ has the exclusive scoop!

Out on October 2nd, “Broken Things” centers on three best friends – Mia, Brynn and Summer. Everyone thinks Mia and Brynn killed Summer – but they didn’t do it.

On the anniversary of Summer’s death, a seemingly insignificant discovery resurrects the mystery and pulls Mia and Brynn back together once again, to solve it.

“This book was loosely inspired by real-life cases involving obsession with fiction and the explosions of violence that can result from a collapse of reality,” Lauren tells us of the inspiration for the novel.

Friendship themes though is something that was always important to her. “It speaks to themes of friendship, fantasy, and toxic versions of love that have long interested me to explore.”

Lauren also told us about how the book was actually really difficult to write, especially from an “emotional standpoint.”

“I loved all the girls, even Summer, who is so troubled, and had difficulty following them down into the darkest points of the story,” she says. “It was the first time I have ever been scared while writing a scene–the one thing I didn’t really know, even as the author, was what occurred that day between the three girls in the woods. I discovered it as I was writing.”

Lauren added that the biggest thing that she hopes readers will learn is the “power of stories themselves: The wrong ones entrap us. The right ones set us free.”
