Yara Shahidi Reveals What's Next for Her 'Grown-ish' Character, Zoey

Grown-ish is getting even realer in Season 2B!
Members of the Freeform series’ cast and creative team treated fans to a never-before-seen episode of the show and a special Q&A on Saturday (June 8) at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas.
Executive producer Craig Doyle and stars Yara Shahidi, Francia Raisa, Jordan Buhat, and Trevor Jackson all participated in the Q&A, during which they discussed what’s next for the hit series and fans’ favorite characters.
Yara, who stars as Zoey in the Black-ish spin-off, talked about what’s next for her character since she was cut off by her father at the end of Season 2A.
“This is the first time that Zoey is generally out of her bubble because she’s always had that socioeconomic status to fall back on,” Yara said, according to Deadline. “Even in those moments where she is connected to the world around her, there’s that layer of the class system and the fact that she has been raised in this wealthier lifestyle.. so her being cut off is such a shift… I appreciate the journey the character goes on.”
Season 2B will continue to tackle tough social issues, including cultural appropriation, mental health, and academic scandal, according to Craig – and it might even go beyond the college campus in the future.
“The idea is this feels bigger than just college. We didn’t want to be just painted into a four-year window where we see people cruise through and cruise out,” Craig explained. “We have that luxury if we wanted to do that… I can imagine it going way beyond and I can imagine it staying in the parameters that it’s currently in.”
