Shrek The Movie Celebrates 20 Year Anniversary!

Can you believe it has been 20 years since the massive hit movie Shrek was released?!

The Dreamworks Animation film, which has turned into a worldwide juggernaut franchise, first premiered in theaters on April 22, 2001.

In the movie, Shrek (Mike Myers) goes on a quest to rescue the feisty Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) with the help of his loveable Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and win back the deed to his swamp from scheming Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow).

When the movie premiered, on it’s first day, it racked in $11.6 million, and $42.3 million for it’s opening weekend, topping the box office. It is the fourth highest grossing film of 2001.

Shrek also was the first ever recipient of the Academy Award (Oscars) for Best Animated Feature, and the first animated film to be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Since the release of the first movie, there have been three more Shrek movies - Shrek 2, Shrek The Third and Shrek Forever After – as well as the spinoff Puss In Boots, plus a Broadway musical, multiple TV series, shorts and more!

In addition, Shrek is often quoted and talked about on social media as fans absolutely love the film.

The original Shrek movie, as well as Shrek 2, is currently available to stream on Hulu.

Available on Netflix are Shrek’s Swamp Stories, Shrek The Musical, Puss In Boots, The Adventures of Puss In Boots series and Puss In Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale.
