Simone Biles Prioritizes Mental Health, Withdraws From Second Olympic Event

Simone Biles is putting her health first and foremost at the Tokyo Olympics!

The 24-year-old has already won a silver medal in the team event, after she withdrew from the competition after one rotation on vault, due to her mental health.

Now, Simone has withdrawn from the all-around event, which she won gold in at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

“After further medical evaluation, Simone Biles has withdrawn from the final individual all-around competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games, in order to focus on her mental health,” USA Gymnastics shared in a statement. “Simone will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week’s individual event finals. Jade Carey, who had the ninth highest score in qualifications, will participate in her place in the all-around.”

“We wholeheartedly support Simone‘s decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many,” the statement continues.

After Team USA won silver on Tuesday (July 27), Simone shared a group photo on Instagram, and expressed how proud of her teammates – Sunisa Lee, Grace McCallum and Jordan Chiles – she was.

“I’m SO proud of these girls right here. You girls are incredibly brave & talented! I’ll forever be inspired by your determination to not give up and to fight through adversity! They stepped up when I couldn’t. thanks for being there for me and having my back! forever love y’all,” Simone wrote.
